1.9d dw8 engine, is it possible to get timing worng?

I second that Panason1c. and that goes for any other "fault" mentioned,if something was wrong it would take ages to start, smoke, knock etc. This engine is just a modified XU,they are bullet proof, but will not pull the skin off a rice pudding.
Just a silly question,you have checked the cable to pump to see if your getting full throttle? an extra bit on the pump lever can make a difference.

Good point about the throttle cable. When moving the lever by hand, rhere does seem to be a large amount of movement in the arm before the revs start to rise. Perhaps I'm misenterpreting having to push the pedal loads.
I guess that throttle dashpot thing could have sunk in, hence why its adjustable.

Cant check tonight, car isn't here.

It won't be that (I think that's at the slow end to stop it stalling)

Get someone (or a length of wood etc) and jam the pedal down, engine off obviously ;) :D

Then go look at the cable on the pump, and check its fully pulled the lever, you do not want it straining though, allow a 1mm or so of play really.
