Oh yes! At motorway speeds sensible diesels are doing 2500 rpm or less, the CX Turbo 2 only revved to 3600 rpm and produced 120 bhp at that, and that was 25 years ago.

The worst thing I ever did was to sell my CX DTR2 Safari. One of the best tow cars I ever had.3.5t all up with the caravan and returned 26mpg,and a good cruising speed to boot.Just driven a 52 plate Saxo 1.4 VTR back to by sister in law after fitting a new clutch in it for her. What a load of rubbish, like driving a go cart,no suspension and all revs.No wonder the manufacturers are binning petrol cars. These new Nox emmissions will be taxed no doubt, another excuse for the various governments to rip us off again,as they are doing at the moment with Co2 emmissions.Come the revolution!!!

We used my partners clio saturday, a 1.2 16v petrol, I was horrified to see the thing dooing 4000rpm in 5th gear at just 80mph!!!

I find though, that bigger V engines DO employ a lower rev in gear simmilar to a DERV...

My C5 2.2hdi regularly returns 48mpg on my commute and is the quietest, most refined and comfortable car I have ever driven, and is rarely over 2000rpm. I have had a few cars in my lifetime, including a v8 rover (2nd best). When I met my wife she had a pug106 diesel, I liked it and in fact kept it when she replaced it, Its now dead after being hit by a mazda3 that could not steer in the snow. The 206 is a 1.4 16v sport, its a nice car but the type of car I would have had at 20 (I think she's trying not to approach 50!!!!!) The biggest reason I do not like it is because of the engine. Having to drive flat out, 6000 revs in lower gears to get any reasonable acceleration and near 4000 revs at cruising speed is frankly very wearing, noisy and uncomfortable, kills the economy and cannot be good for the mechanics of the thing. I used it for a week recently while waiting for the alternator to come for the C5 and only got 41.3mpg on my commute. It would have been a far better car as a 2.0hdi 90. Dont think I will ever want a small 16v petril engine again. Just to old now, at 48, for all the franticness. Give me a big torquey, lazy diesel any time.

My C5 does just a shade over 2000rpm in 6th at 70mph, I like tall gearing. :)

I did think it would be all gear changes with a 6 speed box and such low revs at 70, but its performance beyond 70 in 6th is impressive.

Its one reason I really like diesels.

The Seat we have just sold today would do 4000rpm in 5th at an indicated 75mph - actually 70 on the satnav. It was a bit buzzy! Made a long journey tiring really and was rubbish on fuel at motorway speed. Though it did make you stick to the limit more as the revs got scary!
