Thanks Paul, next time I see the car I shall check that out. :)

Hi Chris,

It sounds like you could have some good fun with this car! Most of the work you mention isn't too bad to do. Working through it all slowly will make it a good car once again. I miss my Prestige (not fuelling it though).

Hi Robert,

I may well do, though some of the jobs may well be long standing ones which get done by a garage. Ive set a few things that I will do, as its usual garage has drawn a blank with them, mainly the speedo. Though most of the list is fairly straight forward and easy to fix.

Luckily this TCT Prestige is LPG converted, which is a good thing

The car is rust free but there are more than enough dings and scratches and a badly painted nose cone. The interior needs a really good clean up but its in good condition underneath.

I was wanting a bit of a project for the summer, was hoping it would be a car of my own though ...

Chris, the W/G is part of the turbo housing and is best accessed from under the car.

Robert, have you sold the Prestige already?!

I need a bit of help with this ... the original speedo issue.

I have got the S1 XM over here today to attempt and sort out the speedo fault, as I have borrowed a spare speedo.

The fault:
The speedo and the mileage do not work for the first 20 miles or so driven, after that the speedo starts to work in phases and the mileage starts to count up too. However when the speedo is working there is a noise which sounds like a fast catching noise, as if small cogs are just a say touching.

I thought this would be the speedo unit itself. I have the speedo removed now and have just tried the car around the block so I can see if the speedo cable, which goes into the back of the unit, is turning, its not.

I have used a drill (sounds a bit back street this here!) to wind up the original speedo and that works fine and does not make the noise I hear when its fitted in the car. So it must be the speedo cable making the noise?

Sounds like it needs a new speedo cable, though surely if a cable breaks its broken and doesn't kick back into life after 20 or so miles. :?

Maybe just the ferrule on the cable moved up and it's just driving by friction instead of being properly located in the head.

Other things that can make it noisy and shaky are a tight bend in the outer cable, dry rusty spots part way down, teeth off the cog in the head that drives the milometer or similar the gearbox end pinion.

When I first read the symptoms it reminded me of one I had where the needle and its bottom stop had become magnetised and were stuck magnetically together until a bump in the road (or a thump under the dash) jarred them apart. G.

Thanks Gibbo,

I have tried in a spare speedo uni and that had the same results, to the problem lies with the cable.

What do you mean by ferrule on the cable has moved up?

The white cap which clicks the speedo cable into the speedo head seems to have snapped off its mount - its still holding the cable tight into the head but there is cable exposed behind the white clip.

I really should have taken photos!

I mean the either brass or nylon bit on the inner cable that controls how much of it goes into the head, nylon ones can come loose and let the cable sink too low in the outer so not fitting properly in the head. G.

Right I see, something to look at then.

Apparently he had a garage check out the cables and they seemed to think they were fine, though there are two cables so maybe the lower one is turning and the upper one isnt.

On the plus side, I did get the cruise control to work

if the cruise control is working then it must know the speed surely, and if its like some of the early 106's it'll have a cable drive out of the gearbox with an electronic sensor on it (was the injection ecu on the 106). So we can rule out that part being at fault, i think the problem is within the join of the cable if its a 2 piece, you'll probably find that the square head of the cable has either worn to a circle or the female end on the other cable has worn so that as has previously been said its not a direct connection but more of a friction based one, which would explain to some degree the after 15 miles theory as it'll get hot.

you could always undo the cable at the gearbox end and use a drill and do it that way (gentle curves on the cable though) that would tell you something. On my xantia though it was the join that screwed mine up
