Theres TWO bolts for the tensioner!! The one on the pivot.. then theres a second one or should be a second one just under the Cam sprocket...

Yes if its tight and BOTH the bolts are tightened it will be fine!

You need to change the WHOLE tensioer assembly on the Aux belt, as its not the pully thats at fault, its the tensioner arm itself...

Its far easyer to remove the tensioner house and set it up off the car.

For this you will need to remove the LHM Pump, and altinator... theres then 4 bolts (Allen head) holding the bracket to the block. Take it off the car and replace the WHOLE tensioner, the needle roller bearings have collapsed, preventing it sitting square and tensioning the belt constantly.

In the meantime, yes, as you sugest just to check it runs will be fine.

Paul

PS: With the cam cover off, have you tried turning the cam sprocket to MAKE sure the whole cam shaft turned??

Update 2....

Put the belt back on properly, and the bottom pulley - tried starting it, engine turned over a fair bit but wouldn't start - I've flattened the jump-starter again (it's only little, and a bit old).

Any ideas?

Paul, I didn't watch the cam turn with the cover off...so can not verify if it was all turning. The original belt was still firmly in place and looked in good order - but like I said the timing was definitely out.

Cheers,

Matt

The belt will look tight and in place as the 3rd Cam Cap will hold the cam tightt...

You therefore need to pop the cam cover back off and turn the engine over to see if the FULL can turns..

The XUD engine can survive one tooth out, but cannot remember if two theeth out cause damage or not...

A DERV should start fairly easyilly before flattening the jump pack, so either the cam is broken, or the timing is still out...

Turn by hand using a spanner, if you try and turn with the key you risk doing more damage if something is broken, and also (done this) spilling oil all over the ground.

FINAL UPDATE.

Paul. I wish I'd done that test to start with - instead of just inspecting the cam without turning it over. Would've saved a bit of time! When i turned it over with a socket on the pulley the cam sprocket turned but the cam itself didn't move at all - conclusion: RIP Xantia - it's been a good car, and such a crap way to die. It's going for spares if anyone wants it. It's got 3 brand new tyres.

Cheers,

Matt

looks like the absence of the tensioner spring caused this then, to much movement in the belt making it jump a couple of notches.
I wonder how much internal damaged has really been caused.

Probably very little damage.
Cassy's cam belt snapped doing 40mph.
Sourced a new cam and plenty of caps to find ones which fitted and she ran fine afterwards.

Matt,

I'd seriously consider repairing this engine there are not to many good xantias left now but plenty of used parts out there.

if the rest of the car has been particularly good to you and has little corrosion it might just be worth it.
