I think there is pretty good proven evidence that the 2.0 HDi 8v is among the best of modern dieses. 8-)
Correct,Ten or more years ago if you visited any city in Europe chances were your taxi would have been a 406,years before that a 504,ditto 404 and so on.I don`t see many new Peugeot taxi`s now.Taxi drivers are the best advert for a reliable/economical car.
Caught a glimpse of the Joanna Lumley - Nile thing - on the box last night. Noticed quite a few old Pug Estates happily tootling about, including the one She was in , bet they didn't bother with FAP filters

Maybe they use a Camel's nosebag instead ...

Possibly a suitable acronym for a fap " the old Camel's Nosebag warning light's on again " - must be full of green gilberts ?

Time to blow it's nose then.

One of the most dissapointing things about my last trip to Sharm was they've gotten rid of the old flying coffins (504s) and replaced them with some east asian bland box.
They've got proper horn buttons and light switches, what's that all about? The 504's managed quite well with just holding two bare wires together and who needs headlights at night anyway? :D

I just drove to Italy and back in our 806 HDI so it's up to 210,000 miles now. I drove as fast as I could get away with most of the time so speedo on 140kmh in Italy and 130 in France.
One of the front wheel bearings seems to be getting noisy but the engine is faultless.

Sounds Good :) Ours has been on t'continent many times with previous BIL owner inc. 3 x trips to Rimini.

Is the 2.0 HDI Syn' higher geared than the 1.9 TD ?
70 mph = appx 2.8 - 2.9K revs with ours.

2.0HDi 8V C5s are just a shade under 2500rpm at 70, I guess the Synergie uses the same box.

Dieselnutjob, what economy did you get out of your HDi 806 for your Italy trip?

There are plenty of 504`s in Luxor and the rest of Egypt.

hi there,
406 hdi executive estate july 2001,i bought her in march 2008 having done airport taxi work at 158,000 miles,
for £1500.00 now december 2012 mileage is 263900 and regular oil, cambelt change, bottom pulley she is easily the best and most reliable car i have ever had in 35 years of driving,
no rust........an absolutely outstanding car in every way.... and its not for sale yet!
prevoiusly had a 205 that clocked in excess of 200000 miles and again with a citroen zx both with 1760cc diesel,
lets see about 407 if i can afford one, alot is down to basic maintenance, fap filters i understand are not a legal obligation to have fitted anyway,
looking forward to many more miles yet.................

I remember the peugeot older diesel and turbo diesel versions of the 205, 305, 309, 405, 505 they were reliable and easy to fix to. Also they never rusted at all the body work would last.

Now the peugeot modern cars diesel xud and diesel dw10 hdi are very reliable and easy to fix 106, 206, 306 406. Also they never rusted at all the body work would last.

I also like citroen xsara xud and hdi models.

I was more of a xud person back in the day. But since owning the 306 hdi I get more mpg.

My opinion is that we must distinguish gasoline and diesel engines.

For gasolines :
The development of most engines for 106,206,306 and 406 is based on 105,205,305 and 405's engines.
They added injection, modified inlet, added a few electronics (just as needed) and kept the BE4-5 gearboxes which have proven their reliability over time.
This is not true for all version (2.0 and more for example, but it is for most 1.4, 1.6, 1.8).
With the newer generations, electronics problems appeared and due to CO2 reduction, engines were redesigned from ground.

For diesels :
The "engine part" of HDI cars for 406 and 206 wasn't as reliable as for gasoline versions.
Injectors suffered from bad quality gasoil (water mainly) and turbo were not strong.

Now, on newer generations, you have the FAP, EGR valve and so on, which are real craps.
They need them to reduce CO2 emission, but this doesn't really help for reliability

What happens nowadays ?
Gasoline and diesel become expensive and CO2's emissions have to be reduced.
Manufacturers are looking for efficiency and reduce consumption, so the increase compressions combustion chambers and sometime add turbos so, even if new materials are used, the end of life mileage is reduced.
When you announce your car has 150 000 miles to someone he says "wow it is unbelievable", it's like people are now used to buy and drop cars like cellphones. You keep it 5 years and consider it as dead.
PSA (Peugeot & Citroen) has the ability to make small size powerful engines while keeping reliability but will need a few more years to "stabilize its technology".
Japanese manufacturers and BMW have the technologies to make better engines.
They already had to face these contraints with motorcycles and they produce up to 120hp with 600cc, 200hp with 1000cc while respecting emission standards.

Today, you still have many 405 with untouched engine running out (despite the poor quality bakelite electronics cards that suffers from humidity), I am not sure that 20 years later, you will have as much 407.

I had a 806 1.9td, never anything went wrong. Had to go along with 1st wife!!!!!! A few yrs later bought an ex airport taxi fiat ulysse 2.0tjd 16v with 210000 miles on clock, added another 40000 on it before selling it for more than I paid. Only problem was a burst turbo intake hose whilst towing caravan. The pug I have now is a 107. It was the dealers courtesy car, I bought it just over a year old with 11500 miles it now has just short of 50k on it, never been in a garage apart from a MOT. Serviced every 10000 miles by myself, only ever oil, filters and brake fluid change, and four tyres. Amazing little car and utter reliability, with the running costs so little it's unbelievable!

We "acquired" a 306GLD fifteen years ago that had been written off,we repaired the body and used it as a workshop hack. Its still in use today!! its been thrashed, abused, used as a tow truck,a four wheel skip, done 170K,starts on the button and runs as sweet as a nut,it just refuses to die.

Thread from the dead! Is it also, really...2 years ago I started this thread. Wow, I wasn't aware I was even on this site 2 years ago lol.

Also, funny this thread should pop up again....
I watched Top Gears new DVD last night....'the worst car in the history of the world'. It was bought as a present for Christmas. Anyway, I know the TopGear bunch often talk a lot of rubbish, but they had a small feature on Peugeot's at the end which....is hard to argue with. They showed an old Peugeot - think it was a 504 or 505 estate, what ever it was, they remarked how great the car was. They then showed a 205 GTI - spoke about it in good terms, being one of the best hot hatches ever. They then got on to the current line up of Peugeot's....in particular the 308 - and explained how utterly miserable the 308 is compared to the older cars. Can't remember what they said, but I found myself agreeing. Worth a watch IMO.
