Everything on them is as simple as possible.
I did hear at the time, this was because Toyota did not want to be involved with 'our' multiplexing ;)

Well, i don't blame them

Simple is best when your after a reliable car. I will say though, that i really like the C1s, they are really very good at being a small car. It does every thing i expect and more, plus its really good fun to drive and costs noting to run. One of the few small cars I like now.

The 504's got to be in the top 3 - look how many went to Africa, and loads of them are still there now. The 205 and 405 are still to be seen in large numbers all over France, fantastic cars. For some reason the French never really took to the 406 in the same way.

My lad, who bought his Mum's 205 after she got a Clio, now owns a new Audi TT and has now expressed the desire to get himself a 205 as well, to use as a 'rat car' for stuff like going to the tip at weekends. You certainly couldn't get a bin bag in the back of a TT...only enough room for one of these :teabag:

305 with the XUD engine. Hewn from granite these were. Much less problems with suspension and brakes than 205 and 405. Have had plenty of each model mind you and they're all good though.

I do like the 305's although they are a bit old now. I do seem to recall they could rot if you were not careful though, possibly more so than 205's / 405's...

205s were the best of the three for rot certainly.405s are particularly bad at the rear floor/chassis rail sections. My own one will need attention there for its MOT I fear..

I have to say the 206 is not a patch. 205, 405 and 306 were that last truly great cars Peugeot made. The 406 is not at all bad and in V6 Coupe form, one of the very best Peugeots ever on looks.
Agreed on the 206, no way near as good as 205, 306 etc. the 206 has become not much more than an accessory for young girls that want mummy and daddy to buy one, and it must be a good car because it looks pretty or whatever :? Reliability of the 206 seems.......well, very very hit and miss? Some seem to give no trouble and do high mileage, yet others seem to be complete piles of rubbish which are nothing but trouble?

Personally I like the 406 a lot, in high spec late saloon form in that dark midnight blue - nice looking car.

Most Reliable, I'd say...

An XUD engine'd 405 or 309. Although, my other half has a Peugeot 107 on a March'10 Plate and it's given no grief, even though it's now on 16,000 miles and is treated as a rollerskate. It pulled up to past 7000rpm and laps it all up.

Most un-reliable... The 1.6 Carb 405. In my experience, my Mum had one of these and it was forever causing grief. The amount of times I was late for school was astonishing... And to think, it was only 10 years old when we had it! My Xantia at 11 years old, sporting much more electrical fanfare, starts every time, first time... (Unless I'm a numpty and forget to put in the Pin number!)

The XUD will be reliable in most body's , just things like electrics or hoses that might let it down.

The carb'ed 405's were not great when they were not far off new from what I remember to be honest. They did run very nicely when they were new, but once they were say five or more no.

The 107's , yes the Toyota lump or the nice 1.4HDi unit both are good engines and they are not multiplexed either as far as I am aware which although might make any fault finding more difficult should in theory reduce any potential problems at the same time as you're not fighting multiplexing issues.

Very nice, driving it as intended! They do make quite a goof noise for a tiny engine once the revs rise, excellent little 3 pot engine.

That is one thing i really like about them, they are so basic but well built and reliable. Nothing extra to go wrong on them. Ideal!

I think the most reliable cars were made in the '90s and they were much easier to repair, but the early 2.0 Hdi's seem pretty good with quite a number for sale with in excess of 300,000 miles - that inspires confidence :D

Enjoyed one of these for a day ( hire car ) my daughters were highly amused by the engine note when I booted it , sounded great and not that far removed from an early 70's 911's gruff roar , not quite as quick though.

A friends 3 cyld. Triumph Bike sounds similar , sort of , highly addictive.

Loved the 405 XUD Estates after the rear torsion bars had been tweaked up a few splines.
406 Estate - roomier , huge boot , but could feel the body flex when driven , a la' Xm. poor door fits.
Fettled a few pug 504 etc 2.1,2.2,2.3 Diesels all same issue - heads cracking .
Used to service a DS - super 5 , lusted after it , still do !
