Nice avatar myglaren,

I have a citroen specialist nearby (well they sell citroen and have a garage, how do you tell?) they have been helpful in the past, I just worry that they might suck air over their teeth and tell me to book it in so they can clean me out.

I have already succeded in doing some work on the car using advice off this forum, mainly the clutch clip and cable replacement.. Loads of fun! I'm quite slight so I fit easily into the awkward areas of the xantia, and my arms reach into places where others would be loosing skin. I am also quite practically minded (famous last words eh?).

Locally (to me) we have had four PSA cars made between '97 and '99 recently with deteriorating paralytic converters.

These were letting chunks of the catalyst material go downstream; the bits would lodge in bends or latter mufflers generally stifling performance and causing idle issues.

Point of this is - not only may the cat be rogered, but you need to pull off the rest and shake it out!

Please don't write off all dealers there are some good ones

The chaps on reception are fairly knowledgable themselves and will write any extra bits you ask on the sheet while you're there.

They do have a look at finding out whats wrong and research the problem first, FOC, before then working to a price to fix it, today they have been carrying on trying to find out why my air bag light keeps coming on on my C4? And you do get to speak to the engineer working on your car: :D

I certainly do agree with this, it's not just the garages that have access to information these days!

Seen XM's and CX's worked on at my dealer :)

The dealer I'm talking about is Duxford Service Station!!

Thanks for the info John, my bio-dream may come sooner than I hoped!

Citro jim may have got it sussed there, I did notice a pretty frequent drip from the join between the cat and the back box. So, i have had a bit of a browse on the forum and noticed a thread where stempy filled the join with mastic, I might give that a try or some aluminium tape which I think is in the shed, untill I get around to doing the work properly, or is there a better quick fix?

However I have also got the spark plugs, oil and filters for a service, as I figured on being able to check the condition of the engine by looking at the old plugs (I was worried by hearing that the phutt phutt sound might be a cylinder fault). Thing is the bloke at halfords sold me some bosch fr 78 x, which is against what the haynes manual suggests, as I am a car care newby I am wondering if there is an issue with using them?

Hey Addo, presuming i would have to let the citroen garage rodger my pussy cat and then pull off and shake out all the mechanics to get a good price I think I would be happy to replace the lot my self, is that job a no no for a newby to diy mechanics?

The hardest part with newer Peugeot/Citroën exhausts (to me) is access to the manifold flange bolts. Fit a new gasket and bolts on reassembly.

Aside from that you just need good clearance under the car; putting two wheels on the kerb isn't enough to get the forward section free.

Thanks to all for the help,

Citrojim managed to give a very good diagnosis there, replaced all the plugs, filters and oil today, filled and taped the join in the exhaust as a temporary measure, and also found the local citroen specialist tucked away in the back of an industrial estate, who confirmed what citrojim had said as being the cause (plugs etc). Just had a little cruise and all is sounding good at the tail pipe...

I will have a new thread to start soon as while she was up on stands I checked the cv joints and found a split boot

Thanks again for all the advice.

That's great news Mr. Xants :D

CV joint boots are an OK job. Which one and on which side?
