Now then boys [-X Play nicely now. Poor Lucas is a very sensitive pump and gets upset by all this teasing :)
It's the over-sensitivity that I don't like - nothing to do with the fact I keep embarassing myself assuming it's a bosch and showing my ignorance. (Admins, the whistling smiley isn't working javascript:emoticon (':- )

Hmm, I think a pic is in order here. Is it possible?

Managed to loosen the feed pipe union on injector 3 & so, have a listen with that one knocked out. No joy, the same loud knocking is there.

Cleaned everything up thoroughly with a can of brake cleaner afterward so I'll know if there's a fresh external leakage of oil/diesel & maybe be able to see exactly where it's coming from, injector #1 or somewhere else.

Here are some pics of the pump

Googling seems to indicate that this is the 'Lucas' pump? Apparrently it contains some kind of immobiliser?

Seems like Paul was right then. Does it have a cold start advance system?

(just to quickly mention - after playing with it for a while now, I'd say although the knock does seem subjectively quieter when the engine is hotter, it doesn't go away anything like completely. So my mention of it as a 'cold start' problem might possibly be slightly misleading. It's just that the noise is at it's scariest when cold lol)

could be just that the timing is over advanced, when did you first notice it?

6 months ago? It's gotten progressively worse at a relatively constant rate over that time, then seemed to suddenly get quite a lot louder a few days ago which was what prompted me to start this thread.

Oh - I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the two electrical connectors which are fastened to the side of the pump. The contacts looked clean and undamaged, no corrosion or burn marks. Replugging them did not affect the running for better or worse though.

Regards a cold start advance system - I'm not sure. How would I be able to tell?

I think my next action will probably be to book it in with the diesel specialist.

I'm not familier with the pump on that engine but the old mechanical ones had a thermostat connected by a cable to to the throttle lever which held it open a little until it got warm, sounds as though yours has an electronic system, I have only met that on a 1.8 ford diesel and you can certainly hear the difference when you remove/connect the leads. Seems yours is not working, is that what Paul was talking about?

Perhaps an oil change might quieten it down a bit but I'm wondering if the noise is due to a faulty ECT sensor like mine? Again, I'd recommend a Lexia sesssion, have you checked the map of Lexia volunteers?

Ahh! So the standard EOBD reader I've been using has not been reporting the full range of stuff that's available maybe..

I had a look at 'Lexia 3' offerings on Ebay and it doesn't seem to list the Dispatch as a supported Citroen; however it does list the Peugeot Expert which as far as I can tell is virtually the same van.

I'll check into the map of volunteers as you suggest :D

[edit] thanks for pointing us at the map - found it, the closest 2 members to me would be Sheffield or North Wales, but I'd be scared to try and take it that far.

Taken it to the diesel specialist now. On the last run, temperature didn't make the slightest bit of difference to the noise, it was just loud loud loud all the way. Worst under acceleration, almost but not quite absent on the overrun. It stalled a few times at junctions etc. Driver following behind did not report noticing any smoke at all.

GF suggested tappet clearances; googled and found http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/repair-20 ... ee02k3.htm maybe she's right. Anyway hopefully find out tomorrow what exactly is up with it.

Still sounds like the pump timing is over advanced, for what reason I don't know.

Diesel guy agrees with you. He thinks it might be something to do with recent work on the clutch & gearbox having possibly affected an engine sensor. Should get some further info tomorrow hopefully.

Diesel guy has now completed his investigations & fixed the problem. Injector number 1 nearest the flywheel, had 2 seperate problems. It was blowing past the thread causing the oil leak, and the needle lift sensor it contains was faulty open circuit. He has replaced the injector & rethreaded the head, all is now okay :D
