Is it the same one as for the Xantia which GSF sell?

Yesterday I had my wheels off to check my brake pads (found I needed new rear pads). The rear left tyre had uneven wear. The tread depth was higher at the inboard side than the outer edge with a linear profile across the tyre.

The steering has also been pulling slightly to the left for some time now.
Join the club Kev I've got exactly that problem and have been going through things for a while now without a satisfactory result.

I have now reached the conclusion that it is the rear end which is causing it to drift to the left.
Now the rear wheel tracking is 4 degrees towed in I believe that is done because the rear subframe is mounted in so much rubber the toe in is required to make it track true. Now if the subframe gets canted such that the RH wheel is running at 0 degrees to the center line and the LH wheel is well toed in then it would explain why the LH tyre wears on the outer edge.

So, the alignment of the rear subframe could be the issue. Could this be worn mounting rubbers?

Seems quite likely to me every other bit of rubber in the car seems to start going "manky" at around about 100K why not the rear subframe bushes.

The front bushes on the subframe appear to have different compliance left to right than they do front to back at least the orientation when fitting requires a "special" tool to ensure that they get fitted correctly.

I reckon the rear ones could be done without removing the subframe but I don't think these are the ones that would give the problem, there doesn't appear to be a lot of rubber in them. Interestingly there was a part number change somewhere toward the end of the S1 but I don't know why.

Front ones? looks like the frame would have to come out to in order to get enough room to extract the old bushes.

I did wonder about fabricating an adjustable transverse link that would allow accurate location and adjustment of the subframe alignment to the body.

Does the C5 have passive rear wheel steering like the Xantia?

(Am I right in thinking that the Xantia has passive rear wheel steering?)

I've been looking through info on the Xantia rear suspension and can't quite understand how the rear wheel steering is achieved. Can anyone else help?

All I can assume is that the rear wheel movement must be due to the flexibility of the rear subframe mounting rubbers as the body leans on cornering.

C5 rear arm bearing

Post by tmead »

C5 2.2 HDi (51 plate) 82K miles, no idea about loads or towing in history.

Just done the offside on mine. They were well and truly done in. very corroded and no lube left. One had ejected a roller into the seal !

Wondering about the other side now.

To anyone thinking of this job.
1. You need a T55 torx bit for the anti roll bar. Remove bolts on the side under attack and slacken the other to get extra space
2. You'll need a 16mm single hex socket for the caliper bolts - thanks Citroen
3. welding a plate across the bearing cup is a simple way to knock the old one out
4. bearings and seals are common across Xantia hatch, XM hatch, C15 van - check on Citroen Service. They are available from GSF for about 20 quid for two bearings and two seals to do one side.

It's not easy to put a grease nipple in, i couldn't find anywhere obvious to place one that would grease the bearings properly.

the spacer's and i belive the pivot tube are actualy diferent from all the other citroens, or at least on the estates anyhow,

and you only need to run a couple of beads of mig at opposite sides on each outter bearing race, this is surficiant o drift the bearings out by,

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but it appears the GSF site has changed lately and I can't for the life of me find the rear bearing kit for a Xantia, does anyone know if they're still available?? Vince??

Cheers.
