Yes im sure your right. Yes its only thrid party cover but im guessing a lot of these cars were being crashed into others property, causing expensive payouts for the insuranc ecompany, and higher premiums vfor everyone else.

Yes, well i dont think the C5 is an expensive car to insure really. My other car at the moment is a 03reg Seat Arosa (micro machine) 1.4TDi (excellent engine) with group 4 insurance. My 04 reg C5 VTR 2.0HDi 110 is in group 9. However the C5 is only £60 per year more to insure than the Seat. Crazy, but good.

Ive had quotes for Xanitas and Xms, which are up to £150 more than my C5 to insure ... which i dont understand?

Im 22, soon 23, driving since July 2004, 4 years no claims, no previous accidents and no penalty points (ive never lived have i!), 15K a year for social and commuting etc. The quote im going with is the RAC quote, for £550. Which should be cheaper once i can get my RAC membership number to work. So i dont think thats too bad, just will be annoying losing the ability to drive other cars.

Never mind, ill live

Ill be glad to get rid of Bell though, turning out to be a bit useless of late.

How do you get around the fact that a car must be insured to tax it???
ie you cant tax one vechicle with another cars insurance unless you have traders insurance.
surely this is gonna hit you hard in the pocket at some time???

regards Nigel.
Luckily, all my cars up to now have been taxed.

Anyone know of any trader insurance policies which will accept an 18 year old?
sorry to hit you with bad news but when the tax runs out you are gong to need seperate insurance policies for each car there is a website that does one day, to 1 week insurance policies but this can still sting you a minimum of £45 per car. its handy for taxing purposes, just search for one day car insurance.

Afraid I can't stop myself from butting in.

When you come to live in France you xpect a lot of things will be different to what you're used to in UK.

Motoring in general is a good example, and insuring motor vehicles in particular.

First, hardly anybody here has a car which is modified in any way. Insurance companies (and there aren't many) take all details of the car to be insured and it is looked up on the system. You can't get away with anything, because all accidents of any note are investigated (even wrong-sized tyres will be considered).

If you want to change insurance companies then you have to give written notice to the 'outgoing' company in good time, sent by recorded delivery.

If you have an accident with another vehicle then the drivers (assuming they are still able) have to both fill in a form on the spot - about 20 sections - describing the accident from each other's point of view. The insurance is settled mainly on this paperwork.

The first thing you notice here, however, is that a small green insurance note has to be attached to the windscreen to show the vehicle is insured. Why oh why won't the UK adopt this trivially simple approach?

I dont think a short term insurance policy (a few days or weeks) is good enough to get a car taxed. I dont think you can use a cover note either, or a photocopy of the policy.

French do have a good system, our friends in france showed us the form they have to fill in at the scene of an accident. I think both parties sign it and they record exactly what happened. Here your not even supposed to admit its your fault, even if it obviously is.

I dont think there is a huge claim business there like there is here either? Touch someones bumper and they are wanting whiplash payouts in this country.

Last time i checked even my 2.0 XM has a group 14 insurance rating!! this may go some way to explaining why its a bit more expensive.

I'm thinking of changing the Mégane to an Avantime. The 3.0 V6 Auto. Avantime. I'm calling tomorrow for a quote.

No doubt it will crush my dream completely :(

well we used it and bought a three day policy to tax a cheapy ford fiesta as a standby motor for all the family to use.

we were even able to print off the docs and they were accepted by the post office.

I checked with the post office first of all if the three day policy would be acceptable and they said all that they require is a valid insurance document at the time of taxing the vechicle.

Thats pretty good to know actually, i had always thought it would need to have been a full policy.

Running a V6 Avantime is going to be costly as a daily motor, Luke. Very nice though 8-)

Yes Xantias and Xms are much higher group insurance than the C5, as are Peugeot 406s, even with the same engines.

As I understand it the UK law changed a year or so back.
Continuous insurance is now mandatory.
The only opt out is to declare SORN and cash the road tax in.

Just been looking around for a policy that would allow me to drive any car TP. I am currently with Quinn direct, and have always been able to drive any car no problem.

Bummer! Will have to ring around :(

When I nearly bought an Activa (put down the deposit, got train tickets and everything!) I found it was group 15 and rather out of my league when it came to insuring it and my current company wouldn't insure me for a couple of days due to the group
The last I heard of said Activa was that it currently resided within a Pug 205 or somesuch. A sad day that was.
