i apologise Cachaciero, i was just having one of those "this will be the death of me" moments. don't misunderstand me i really like the C5, as a car it is exactly what i need and for a reasonable price. i will get it fixed in the end.

There is nothing to apologise for, I was not having ago at you or anyone else for that matter, just trying to put things into a slightly different perspective.
The 2.2 has IMHO been unjustifiably panned. Of all the diesels introduced at that time it was the most advanced even revolutionary. There in lies it's problem because most of the garage trade isn't very good at keeping up with revolutionary things and things which are revolutionary usually come with their own unique problems which require good people to resolve. Net result is that things don't get fixed properly or if they do it is often at great and unnecessary expense.

Anyway you've got the right attitude i.e "I will get it fixed in the end" just keep positive and be thankful you didn't buy a post 2005 2.0 HDi nice engine but with an even more complicated managment system :-)

right i am not getting very far with cars at moment :( unsure about makes and models so have been mainly looking at pug and citroens as used to them, there are a couple of xsara picassos on ebay but unsure on petrol vehicles as only had diesels on peugeot/citroen, what sort of price should i try and get the following ones for? unsure if mileage is too high to get several more years driving out of it? thanks for help again

I'd take a test drive of each of the models that interest you. You might find that you hate them, or certain ones of them.

Have you looked on Autotrader? There seem to be better prices there than eBay in a lot of instances.
Also the dealer network, I was looking at Springfield Citroen which is my nearest dealer. There are some decent prices there - note the cars are available through them but distributed throughout the UK dealer network.
