I was told it would cost AT LEAST £1300 for head gasket replacement by a dealer.

I need an idea to let me know whether it is worth it or not. Myglaren said 500 ish but I don't think that will be the case here.

I need some guidance.

FWIW I was quoted £1400.00 for a recon engine to be fitted into an XM and that included collecting the car on a flat bed (40 mile journey). Never followed it up but it does indicate that £1300.00 for a head gasket is expensive. However as has been pointed out what actually needs doing is never clear until the head is off so maybe the dealer is covering all the bases. For £1300.00 I would expect a new head, I reckon labour at garage rates to remove and refit head would be in the region of £500/600.

Hi Boris,

Is this the C5 that was on the video with the strange noise or the other one?

same one.

Plus it makes a high pitch "cricket" sound. Which is not turbo. Took a video of it. Will try and post it up.

The 1300 was at 70+ per hour.

I was quoted 1400 euros in France when first reared head.

Just want to have an idea of what to aim for. Can't afford over a thousand but that seems to be the rates up here.

Still need a new boiler and have another C5 which sounds like the engine is going to fall apart the last time I turned the engine on.

So anyone know a garage in Tayside which could do this for less than £1000

I cannot get over that quote!! I realise it is also mechanic rates, but it still sounds exstorshinate to me.. No wonder so many cars get "Thrown Away" when owners get stupid quotes like that

Been tentatively quoted 40-500 for head gasket and skim, but that was a "off the top of my head". Was a Bosch garage, not my local which appears expensive.

No doubt that will go up. But if I can get it sigh, less stress. Now as the dealer told me, my head may be cracked....Sigh more stress.

Any other figures?

Not heard of 2.oi Heads cracking as of yet on the HDi.. but not really heard of enough failures to get a recorded figure.

Have you tried removing the thermostat yet?
May not need the gasket doing at all.

The head gasket went on my last 110HDi, thermostat was removed, no difference. £1300 for the repair as in the posts from a few years ago doesn't seem too excessive to be honest. I paid £600 to get Rover 416GSi done back in 2002... and was quoted more than £850 to do an XM 2.1TD back in 2005.

£1100 to £1300 seems to be the going rate for indies, they might quote less but find that they can't actually do it for less come the crunch, the complications seem to arise when the head bolts won't undo, they're so tight that the damned heads sheer off making it all but impossible to remove them. Dealers will tell you "Fit a new engine" rather than giving you a quote for the head job.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

We ended up being £600 for removing the head on the escort 1.6 a couple of months ago, that was the total price including the parts. It did not need skimming and all the valves survived although he reground them. Needed a camshaft secondhand from breaker and a new timing belt. I thought that was reasonable but was more than we paid for the car.
