Is this an external drive array and is it multiplexed backplane?
Yes. It's internal but external as far as the server is concerned.

The server is sick and non-fault tolerant at the moment. I'm scared to try a reboot in case the array dies totally. I've had it happen before a couple of times in the past  Although I have backups they will take a loooong time to restore so I'm busy getting ready to migrate the forums to their new host, complete with databases. It's been on test for long enough now and is stable. I shall have it tonight so I can do a quick DNS switchover if the worst happens.

I won't dare a reboot here until we're over on the new servers.

Apologies if the forum is a bit slow, I'm moving some large files up to the new server.
