Hi Steve,

As for autobox oil, as said, ONLY ESSO LT71141 must be used. Cit and Pug dealers sell it in 2L bottles but as we all recommend a number of partial changes in short succession (as the 'box cannot be fully drained in one go), you're better off getting 20L of the stuff. It is expensive, it's golden in colour, smells of cat's wee and costs about the same as gold. Automatic Choice can supply the oil at a fair price.

This is the official procedure to change the oil: AL4 Oil Change. Ideally a Lexia session is required to reset the oil counter and any Citroen dealer (or one of us with a Lexia) can do this after, say, the third partial change.

Oil is expensive but it's cheaper than having to get the 'box repaired if it dies..

As Jim says only use genuine Esso T71141

The Citroen Part No is 9736.22

If you give the dealer the part number they should have some, it is NOT sold under a Total branding.

There is an oil filter in the AL4, but you cannot change or clean it without dismantling the box first, something you don't want to do!

More information here, sorry the thread is a bit long, but has good pictures.

That seems to answer the trans fluid question then. It seems emphatic to use that specific fluid so I'll leave it there.

well ive checked the oil colour and it isnt too bad so would changing it at 90.000 miles be good? it currently has 87,000 on the car.

As for the key ive talked to the local citroen dealer regarding the keys(tried reprogramming to no avail), they made me a deal of £135 for the plip key and the normal immob key, inc vat, is that good?

Right quick update, just got 3 x 2l bottles of the correct auto fluid delivered, (esso lubricant reseller in birmingham) checked it and it is the correct one that ive been advised to use by yourselves.

Ok i need diagnostics, im in worcestershire, and only place/ person i know who has one is citroen (who say that the oil shouldnt be changed so they refused to quote for diagnosics for that perpose)

what now?

Having a lexia does help to get the temp correct, but its not 100% essential.
Give the car a good warm up run before should be good enough, and a good tick over warm up after refilling.

What is important is to get the lexia to reset the 'oil counter', its not something that must be done immediately as it has no direct bearing influence on the oil, what it does is try to count the life span of the oil, if it reaches a predefined number it will put the box in limp home mode. so if you change the oil its advisable to reset the counter.

No need for ramps, with the car on high there is enough room underneath, just make sure the ground is flat.

Check the earlier link I sent you, its got pictures of the oil filler location, the PDF link Jim posted will give instructions on checking the oil level.

Don't worry about chaining the little rubber seals on the drain plugs, they will be good for a few changes at least. Don't over tighten the drain plug on refitting, its only screwing into alu easy to break the thread.

Worry not an Oil change on an AL4 is fairly easy, check my earlier link for some tips. :)

Don't forget , you have a Citroen so the suspension can be raised to the max postion for underside clearance :)
