Then there is the R&D for continual new models. All that experimentation testing , prototyping etc , etc
I would argue that this is what led to the inevitable demise of the Rover 75, in may ways an excellent motorcar.... no way did the company have the resources necessay to develop new models.

Your looking at about £1000 for a new pump and a garage to fit it
But these may be found on eBay for very much less - low hundreds .... sometimes virtually new.

I agree... it used to be rust that determined the life of a car... not its the electronics.

As for running old cars until they give up the ghost...
Well... compare a crash test of a fifteen year old car, with one from a brand new model... and choose which one you want to put yourself and your loved ones into .. :)

I thought headgaskets killed off the 75

The 75 was always one of the better Rovers in my opinion. I had to drive little 25 a few weeks ago, apart from being painfully cramped inside it was actually a nice little car to drive.

Rovers became so old though, and your right, there was no more money in the pot to develop new ones. I think the final nail in Rovers coffin was the CityRover, what on earth were they thinking!

And to think the MGTF is available again, very few people bought it the first time round, its certainly not going to sell now.

Its not even engines which determine a modern cars life, it is the electrics around it which fail and let the car down. Im amased at how many C5s are being broken, alarming for a car which is still fairly modern.

I had the diesel in mind - the BMW 2l lump - good motor.

Becoming 'old' for me was one of its virtues! My Dad had a P4 Rover 90 in the early '50s. Lovely old gal!

I'm not sure where all these figures come from regarding the amount of energy used to manufacture a vehicle. Only a few weeks ago I read that it's more like 20%. This to me would make more sense, if you thank about the amount of energy consumed to do say 100,000 miles in a car that does 35mpg it's colossal. It think such figure could be from way back when all industry was very inefficient.

Anyone know of of such figures provided by a totally independent body?

Going back to the original question I'd go for a quality remap.
