Jim, I had a habbit of dropping the auto into neutral at junctions, however i was warned on the Xm forum not to as this is putting more wear on the box than sitting in D with your foot on the brake (or handbrake on!), which isnt doing any harm.

its always best to check the simple things first, bulbs,switch and then conections, rather than getting into checking for broken wires at the start,
at junctions/traffic lights i always use my hand brake, but if i see a car/lorry aproaching my rear end whilst im at a stop i will flash my brake lights on and of a few times, as a flashing light is spotted easyer than one which is on full,
Jim i dont think you need to drop into N whilst at a junction or traffic lights in an auto, with the car at tick over it should not be trying to pull away untill you apply some right foot, so just applying the hand brake should be enough,
most of the brake light switches in general i have replaced over the years have been melted inside

I have an intermittent problem, and have narrowed it down to the pedal switch. It's about to be removed and inspected.

Yep, had x2 pedal switches recently fail on different Xantia and I rarely keep my foot lingering on the pedal! lol
If the Xant is a manual gearbox car the availability isn't too bad - it's awful if you need a wide auto pedal switch
though as I found out recently on my V6!!
There's x1 10mm nut holding the switch onto the bar of the pedal and the wiring from it runs up to a
single multi plug up near the steering column.

Had been searching for 8 months with absolutely no joy after pursuing every lead I could and in the
end got really fed up with people replying that the wheelnut they were auctioning on ebay had been
weighed in and the pedal wasn't saved. In the end I ended up scrapping a Xantia that coincidentally
had an autobox. It's the same on an Xm so there's a whole load of them sold compared with Xantiae
so that's your best bet. The pedal switch on the auto one is completely different to the manual type
so no chance of swapping the innards around. Of course it's an MOT fail so I needed to borrow a
switch off another daily runner auto to pass the test...

I put my V6's autobox into neutral at a stop and use the handbrake.
- I personally don't think having it sat in D would whilst at stationary
and feel it can't do it any favours compared to using neutral - otherwise
why have the N option?????

Hello everybody, I am suffering at the hands...or feet of my brake pedal switch too. checked fuses and bulbs all fine so i looked at taking the pedal apart and switch out. The copper piece inside the unit where the spring has pressure on it has snapped and i cant fix it. PLEASE somebody tell me where i buy a new whole pedal brake switch?! Thanks
