Well the battery is on charge now so see what difference that makes. I did notice that one cell was low on electrolyte so topped that up before charging, hopefully that'll solve the problem of the non starting.

Still not sure on the speedo though

Toby,

If the batt is really only reading 10V just after coming off charge then it is cactus most likely - this is suggestive of a completely kaput cell, and a bit of distilled water is not going to fix it.... :o

As for the speedo - no idea, but you used to own a French car, should be used to Gallic shrugs like that

It was reading 10v before a charge. So hopefully the charge and top up will help.

Indeed I am, it is annoying though as I have the week off work this week and it means I can't really go for a drive without a speedo.

In my experience if a battery cell needs topping up its a pretty good indicator that the cell is knackered.

Hi Toby

Just had a look on tinterweb and had a gander at your posts on the VXON forum :) :)

I see that you have changed the cluster/dials etc and you still have the same problem :( :(

Have also found This Site

Maybe nothing like the connections you have but not sure if you had seen it :) :)

Well I've charged the battery and its still dead so thats one problem methinks. As Richard says, maybe once they need topping up they are dead already.

Thanks for that Colin. I don't believe thats the problem as all seems fine. Maybe the dead battery just kills something in the clocks and so on changing the circuit board it worked until the battery killed it again.

More often than not, but not always.

My neighbour's SEAT wouldn't start.
Checked the battery, practically bone dry.
Took it out of the car, filled it with H²O, charged it for 48 hours and it was fine for another two years when they gave the car to a relative.
They had never once checked the battery in the three years they had owned the car

Well after all that it was the battery, bought a new one today that is slightly beefier than the old one (68AH rather than 54AH) and the car starts now, also sorted the speedo too.

Thanks to everyone for your help, especially considering it isn't French

Toby, glad you sorted your problem - batteries can cause all sorts of strange problems. My dad's old vectra (now dead) was running fine until he stopped for a news paper - he came out and it would'nt start. Dead Battery was the problem.

Batteries are much more powerful these days than in the 60's and 70's, they are also much more compact, as a consequence when they fail they do so without warning!

My Xantia has a citroen item, the levels are checked and it gets the occasional trickle charge, it will be seven years old this year.

I always fancied an omega, I have had a senator and a royale saloon, however I have heard too many horror stories. Has yours been ok?

Indeed, this one went without warning too!

Well I actually have 2. One is a 2.5 Auto, that one is on loan at the moment and have been told its running faultlessly. Once another car has been sourced I shall be getting that one back and selling it on

The one I use is a 3.0 Manual Elite. Mechanically it is fine, I do have a slight intermittant issue but hopefully that will be sorted once I have got it hooked up to a Tech 2. Only thing that annoys me is it is slightly rough around the edges, bits of trim, missing bolts etc etc. I'm sure it wouldn't bother most people but me it does  Thats not something that I can put down to it being a questionable car, just the previous owner not looking after it. I did get it cheap though. A few issues but what car doesn't? Mainly cosmetic anyway

So far so good really.

I'm assuming you have heard stories of cambelt failures? What else?

If you actually are after one, am always happy to help answer any questions that I may be able to.

As you said Toby, cambelt failures, head gasket / oil cooler probs plus other electrical problems - I have also seen a few scabby ones. Having said that I would chance a 2.2 diesel - the v6's are too thirsty for my liking
