Then of course after 1996 when steels went to 15" all were in line..

Not all went to 15 inch, 1.8 16v petrols up to 1997 S1 still used 14's, diesels as mentioned had bigger wheels for bigger brakes.
The switch to S2 everything went 15 inch.

I have jacked up the car and removed the wheels and checked steering joints and drive shafts, the fact is I bent the edge of my nearside front wheel on a pothole which once repaired balances to zero ok but it is still buckled according to the tyre fitter who showed me the action of the buckle on their balancing machine,
I have ordered two new wheels now because my spare is also buckled and has the same affect on the front of the car as the current fitted nearside wheel.
the bottom joints are fine and I do check these a couple of times a year and yes I do know they can only be checked for wear once the load is removed from the wheels ie the car has to be jacked up.

On my XM wheels there are codes and text stamped into the rim near the valve hole. It is sometimes difficult to see. I scraped and sandpapered off the rust and found the code 6J15 H2C.
The 6 refers to the width. You need to know the width to make sure you get the correct wheel for your car.
You may be offered used wheels which have a different width.
My local Citroen dealer parts dept. confirmed that I had the correct wheels for my model.

when you order from Citroen they ask for the last 7 digits on your vin /chassis number and the larger wheels were ordered acording to the corresponding brake caliper size fitted to the car.
Anyway i shall be checking them for fit before launching into having new tyres put on them and making silly mistakes
two days from ordering to purchase from France to the UK is pretty good and they did check to see if there was any in the UK first.

I do have to HOLD my hands up and admit Ive NOT had much to do with Petrol Xantias, just the Diesels..
They still put 15" wheels on the smaller calliper braked cars.. Only the Estates in S1 had larger brakes... Ive also got a customer S2 car with SMALLER brakes, but 15" wheels..

yes paul, But I have tried to fit 15" wheels from an estate with smaller calipers and they won't go on because the inside of the wheel touches my larger calipers. hence why I got fed up trying to track down the right size wheels and bought new fron Citroen.

having the knowlwdge that my wheels are definately buckled as I mentioned above and hitting a deep pothole and squaring the edge of one wheel on the O/S then straightenning it with a lump hammer and drift, I will replace them first, and if the vibration persists in 3rd 4th and 5th gear the intermediate bearing will be next. just having new tyres fitted changed the behaviour of the wobble/vibration, so I reckon its the wheels.
I have checked the driveshafts for excessive movement, wheels off the ground.
has anyone any idea please how many miles intermeadiate bearings are likely to last ie do they fail at similar milages or can they go at any time?
might be useful information?

At Last I can confirm that the strange wobble behaviour between 40 and 50 MPH was the wheels citroen charged £111 inc vat for 2 new wheels and the tyre company swapped the tyres over with new valves for a tenner for both.
what still concerns me though is my gear stick has a wobble fit occassionally through aceleration and this may point to an engine mount softenning or perhaps the offside driveshaft bearing starting to go.
there has definately been a massive improvement with purchasing new wheels.
thank you everyone for your help and guidance along the way.
best wishes.

Hi
I need a couple of 15" steel rims for the '96 2.0i SX auto I have recently acquired, and came across your post. I know it was a long time ago, but I was wondering if you may by any chance still have any of those rims?
