I must be honest and say I've never driven a 2.1 Xantia, I assumed it would be the same as the XM, except for the pump of course.

Peter, I know the 2.1 is the best, but the comment was that there tends to be different tunings when fitted to the Xantia - the one I tried was more like a 1400 D!!

The XM's I have sampled with the 2.1 manual setup HAVE been VERY good and impressive!

hi which is what i wanted to know about.
If you want a diesel xantia that's fun and responsive yet still economical, go for the 1.9TD
If you want a diesel xantia that's economical and a workhorse for towing, go for the 2.1TD
If you want a 2.1TD that's fun and responsive yet still economical, go for the XM with a mechanical pump.

If you want a faster car .. you don't get a diesel, you get a nice CX2500 GTi Turbo ... Or maybe a Series I 24valve V6 XM (Get the CX though :)).

We buy DERVs here for a reason.. because the goverment has made motoring so DAMM EXPENSIVE here we have to by DERVs to get around.. unless you have a really good job! I have a S1 24v XM.. but no way could use it as an every day car, at around a pound a Litre for petrol AND diesel, it obvious which we;ll buy..

We can only dream of CX GTi Turbos! Well , I certainly can only do that..

Never driven the 2.1. I can`t see how 20bhp more and another handfull of torque can make it slower  .

1.9td is nice..........but the torque is high up. Nothing in third at trundle...you must drop down.

The 110 hdi has the same 20bhp more.........and it feels like it. It has that ooomph. You don`t think you are doing more until you look at speedo then realise you aint even changed up yet!

I think 1.9td feels faster as it is revving more freely. Maybe some of the 2.1 with Epic are needing Dynoed as they may be down on power?

I drove Jim's 2.1, its a plodder and it may have more torque than the 1.9 once going which would be noticeable in gear at cruising speeds, but the 1.9 was more responsive and pulled equally as well if not better through the gears. But, mine was tweaked, only slightly.

It also seemed to lack the character of the 1.9. The note is far more subdued and dull.

For me, the only reason to chose a 2.1 over the 1.9 would be for the extra economy it offers (it is more efficient and the gearing is longer). In real world driving i was more than happy with the 1.9.

I am a plodder, so it suits me fine but it also goes up hills without changing gear - that I like, and the 50 mpg of course

Bar for not being able to burn veg, the Lucas EPIC is a very, very competent and good pump.
BUT they don't last forever like the Bosch...
