malcom,
this might interest you, I have just been down the shops and put my xantia 1.9 TD estate is second gear and floored her she climbed to 47mph and didnt hold back until the rev counter reached 50,000 rpm and that is in the red,
Now I have always wondered why my 1.9TD has more power than say my Dads 1,9TD VSX Hatchback. Dads turbo seems to kick in a little late around 55mph where as mine kicks in at around 40mph, my rev range seems more fluid than my Dads VSX, in other words a little wider and more powerful. I wonder if there is anything in this field of thought, i wondered if the gear ratios were any different in the estate Mk2 compared to the hatch Mk1 VSX.
regards Nigel.

Right back to the more serious issue of getting this AX through its MOT,
the air filter was changed new plugs fitted the two little rubber hoses that come out of the air intake were split at the ends so we bought a length of vacuum hose and replaced them. we changed the oil and didnt run the engne until it was time to drive to the test station.
drove the car 5 miles before the test and it passed on the first attempt to test the emmissions. apparently if it passes first time they dont attempt to test it again as the emmissions test machine can be fickle and the lambda sensor can also be fickle, if the test can as advised by the testing station fail in the mornning and pass in the afternoon having done nothing to the car in between the tests, isn't the emissions test another goverment money making scam? incidentially prior to the AX sitting for three months on a driveway for repairs the very first MOT emmissions result was a pass with dirty plugs dirty oil and a dirty air filter, which leaves you wondering exactly what conditions changed other than the weather being slightly colder when the first test took place.
I am now convinced that this emmissions test is just a scam to make money and the reason the garages dont report the fact that the results can be fickle is that they to make money out of it.
This so called once respectable country is coning the motorist every way it can. The truth is it is very hit and miss

Delighted it passed Nigel
I believe the only momey-making scam involves those who make cats. There are other ways to clean up emissions without the use of a power-sapping waste of precious metals that also wastes petrol because of their need to run stochiometric at all times to work.
Just before cats became mandatory, lean burn technology was nearing maturity and that, if developed, would have both cleaned emissions and saved precious fuel. Ill-considered legislation killed it dead.
It is easily possible for a good, well tuned, modern engine to pass emission limits without a cat but the law says one must be fitted.

firstly you did work on the car before re presentting it, so that could have fixed the fault/s if there were any
then also the engine might have been a lot hotter the second time around,
if a CAT car dose not achive a pass on the quick test, the tester then has to run the full emmisions test, which is a lot more involved and they then have to get the CAT up to its full working temp by holdding the revs up whilst the machine runs a count down
although i dont trust the eegiots who make up these rules either,
so i do know were your comming from

yep good luck John.
nice blog on the TD engine, I've piched a copy of the photo showing the track of the serpentine belt, it cost me £400 to get that done in a citroen garage and if you think your xantia pulleys are strange I have 2
adjustable pulleys and one automatic pulley, one came from the C5 apparently according to the garage. its tucked behind the alternator with a massive shock absorber on it, looks like something off a moped. then theres the manually adjustable pulley near the bottom right of the belt and another just above it mounted behind the lower one.
it took citroen nearly a week to fit my serpentine belt replacing 2 and adding 1 extra pulley to the engine. you should see the exploded diagram
of the extra auto adjust pulley they put behind the alternator,
you'd have to haven an engineering degree to just understand the diagram.
Thanks for the piccy it'll come in handy when I find the time and the bottle to DIY my own. MK2. TD.
I'm glad they did it now because it was a week before christmas.
but I'm still getting my ears bent about the price. fortunately the mechanic left some of his specialist citroen tools under my bonnet so I got my monies worth in the end it was fate.
regards Nigel.
