We have distance markers on the main highways that are legislated accurate to within five metres of position. Makes it easy to check the odometer over (say) 10km.

Similarly, I set my cruise control and use a stopwatch with these marker posts to get actual speeds; 10km is the minimum I'll accept as fair trial. It's fun when you know the speed so accurately, to "walk the wire" when many drivers are fearful of getting caught speeding by more than a couple of percent (tolerance in some states).

2.0i … 31 mpg, driving steadily in an urban area infested :evil: with 69 traffic lights over a distance of 15 miles.
The speedometer shows 5 km/h over.
