Its probably me :? My Mk1 exclusive is on its 4th ribbon since I owned it, and it has just gone intermittant on my Mk2. Perhaps I steer too vigorously?

At least one, probably 2 of my failed units were mis-handled during or after removal, and 2 others died of old age.

All cars with a passenger-side airbag (Mk1 and Mk2) use the same ribbon assembly.

3 types - First 1993/4 NON Air bag veriety!

2nd type, 94 - 97 AIR BAG Veriety, and then 3rd type S2 sort..

ALL are joined plug to plug just under the steering colum, or to the left of it..

S2's ARE completely different to S1's HOWEVER, LATE S1's around the 1997 mark started useing the same plugs in the wheel...

Difference being you ALSO have the horn running through S2's as its activated by the airbag boss.. were as S1's are on the indicator stalk...

Ive never look to see if its a seperate harness from the colum to the radio, or if its taped up when built.. Ive a few of the steering asseys though, Im sure of it...

I have installed an aftermarket Radio-Usb-Touchscreen in my Xantia. It looks very nice, and it's practical. It's one of these chinese radios (7010b) that they have into the rear voltage plug, one pin that is for the steering wheel controls that might have tha car that it will be installed to. The unit, has a firmware that can "learn" the functions of every existing button (It's programmable) ....So.... I was wondering.....If the cables that come from my steering wheel are +12v, ground and command.....and the connection is between the ground and the command ..... if I find which one is the ground line (and connect it to the chassis) and which one is the command line....(and connect it to the aftermarket radio's steering wheel control pin) I might have somekind of signal to this pin , and I might be able to program the buttons for this unit..... Maybe , tomorrow , I 'll try it.....

The controls on your steering wheel may not be compatible without modification. Which original head unit did your car have, Clarion or Phillips?

These radios usually simply respond to seeing an external resistance of a certain value at the steering wheel, and execute that command. Some steering wheel controls are just a passive resistance-switch array, others might have vehicle-supplied power. Radios can have a rear-side pin (and Gnd) for this; others (eg Sony) have a 3.5mm jack for remote control.

The value of the resistances used by various makes of radio can vary. Sony and Pioneer use fairly high values, others use much lower values (down in the hundreds of ohms).

I did research and try an aftermarket interface box, which was listed as allowing XM controls to operate with a Sony, which also had a learning facility. Whether this was activated or not, the interface didn't work (many of them don't, it seems), and I ended up simply replacing the steering wheel resistances with Sony's preferred values. This has worked faultlessly.

Hello again my fellow frenchlovers. I've replaced my multimedia player again , with an android one. It works perfectly. And, it has steering wheel controls programmable feature. So, I was wondering if someone could reupload the schematics for the x2 series, the one with 3 cables, also if someone could upload another one with the pinouts for the brown plug that stands for the steering wheel controls. If someone could help I want to try connect it to the android , and try to program the steering controls. Thank you in advance!
