Thank you for all the replies, Ben yes that does make sense. I think i prefer the S1 way of doing things!

It does seem that MPG varies hugely on the C5, some people report getting close to 60, others around 50, most around 45 and the odd few under 40. How can this be?

Ive also noted, somewhere in this thread, someone mentiones the mon-deo being more economical than the C5, yet the book figures for the mon-deo are about 3MPG less than the C5s book figures!

Petrol is 85.9 a litre here and diesel is 96.9, both from the local Shell garage.

I know every car has its problems, so i expect a few, just nothing too major hopefully!

I believe that mpg variation is mostly down to the driver and weather conditions. I have got between 46 and 59 from my xantia doing the same type of driving; I'm sure if it were a town car then I'd be below 40.

Some interesting sites are out there for improving economy - and consensus seems to be that it's all in the driving style!

Just as one example - downhill on a dual carriageway, do you keep a constant throttle and let the car accelerate? Or throttle off to achieve a constant speed? Or coast and let the car accelerate? With diesel at nearly £1 a litre I know what I prefer!

Just my tuppeny's worth...

Yes im sure your right, its mostly driver habbits. Although to rule anything else out you need to have a mechanically sound car, properly serviced with everything working right etc.

Id ease off and keep my speed, although on uphills i would accelerate and keep my speed. Although im not the most economical ddriver ever.

I thought id update this thread and thank everyone, mainly ben!

I bought bencowells C5 yesterday, im very happy with it :D

On the return drive home (about 80 miles) i got 47.5 MPG on the display, which is impressive. Ben tells me it usually underreads by 4mpg, so ill see if it has next time i get fuel.

Today ive done about 100 miles, mostly lots of steep hills and twisty roads, with 5 people aboard and a lot of luggage at an average of 46mpg. Which is excellent considering the roads and the weight on board. Although that has came down to around 42 with a bit of town use.

So all is good so far, the C5 is a great car, im very happy ive chosen one :)

I am very impressed with the refinement, space and the spec it has - the cruise is great. It handles better than i thought it would, the ride is superb on the comfort spheres, not quite Xm like but not far off!

So long as it stays reliable im sure we will get along nicely

Chris.
