Hi John, I've always been wary of leaving the drive shaft hanging onto the diff bearing, as I am sure the weight and length of the shaft distorts the bearing housing. You then get all other problems with the diff and planetary gears!
Did it come out when you took it to the specialist? Did he use the special extractor tool? You know, the one with the wooden stick thing and the heavy metal lump on the end.

I have yet to roadtest the car, but yes! two autobox specialists took the gearbox under their wing and whilst I held the box, one bashed the inter bearing with one of those wooden and ?brass / bronze heavy things while rotating the shaft.. slowly, very slowly it came out!
I dont know how much the hammer weighed but I want one! I thought my 3/4 lb lump hammer was a good object but maybe its not enough for some jobs..
anyway, the roadtest will be the final decider, but the driveshaft is nothing compared to the amount of work I have just gone through, alone, to change a V6 engine!! just hope the box has survived ok....
