C5 HDi, exhaust puffing from injector

I have seen a Merc Vito engine with the cam case full of coke as a result of injector blow-by! No viable way to clean the head - van went for breaking.
A word of caution about using chemicals like oven-cleaners to remove carbonised oil/fuel. Strong alkalis (caustic chemicals) vigorously attack light (aluminium) alloys. They will 'instantly' destroy machined surfaces. The worst possible thing is caustic soda (sodium hydroxide).
No such problems with steel, but do watch out for rubber/neoprene. Nylon/PU/PTFE should all be proof against most cleaners.
Best to use a purpose-made cleaner.

Interesting. All in all, an eye-opening experience, and thankfully one that worked out cheap. I'll keep a close eye out for further exhaust 'blow-by'.
