I travelled along them roads myself last weekend..All i can say i am glad i was in the car not the truck..Very nice scenery though..I also found it amusing when i had to put £2 through a slit in a front door to use a toll road..

Well, got the XM back today. Took a few minutes to get used to it after only driving Xantias for 3 years but the XM is just amazing to drive. Much better seating position than the Xantia, much more comfortable and better in the handling dept.

Just brilliant!

Further details tomorrow, promised myself and early night.

Though one very weird thing. Both my Xantia and XM were first registered on EXACTLY the same day. Fate?

Sorry we had to rush off but it was a race to get to Brownie camp to collect the little one. Went and picked up the white XM after that all ready for tomorrow.

The XM is lovely to drive. When you get to CXM, I'll let you have a drive of the white one - if you like the green one, the white one is way better.

Got the first job ticked off the list after work today, glowplugs. A nice straight forward job with the EPIC. Now it starts without any help and makes the Xant look slow at firing up

After loosing things down engine bays before, all the glowplugs and spanners were tied to my fingers with wool and it did come in useful when a spanner made a bid for freedom.

An interesting idea ... I hope you undid the glowplugs from your fingers before closing the bonnet

I did almost forget but I wasn't going to say anything

I've not got a telescopic magnet at home but we do at work, it provides a good few lunchtime's worth of entertainment!

Todays job was the exhaust backbox. I spent lunchtime ringing around to try and source one for a sensible price but the cheapest I could find was £70

Que a trip around the local trading estate after work looking for suitable scrap exhaust systems. We came up trumps with two exhausts in very good condition with the correct diameter piping, one of which will be used for the XM and the other for some guy dad knows who wants one for his tractor.
Work began on the XM backbox this evening, pipes shortened then flanges matched up followed by a reduction in the length of the silencer to fit, thats tacked back together now and will be welded proper tomorrow. Final things to do on that are the mounting points and smoothing off the tail pipe.

There's so much satisfaction when you can do a job like this yourself and save a few quid

EDIT: Is there really a need for 3 silencers and a cat on the 2.1 XM ?!?!

well, they don't make them anymore and I really wanted a new BX - Richard says it drives like a 40,000 mile car! It's going on a classic policy so am limiting the miles to 5000 per annum. Glad I didn't buy Ian Fearn's one - it went for £1355 for almost the same spec but ever so better condition.

The car port will soon be cleared for it when the smart roadster goes on the road!

More importantly, SWMBO can drive it - she hates 'four pedal' cars

I really do hope you find the other keys, I'm afraid to disconnect the battery as no doubt like the Xantia the alarm will start blaring and with no remote to disable it things could get interesting

In other XM news, the backbox is coming along. We've welded the end plate back on properly and smoothed the join off with the grinder, you would hardly know it had been shortened. After putting it on for testing we found that that third silencer does infact make a difference to the sound and there was no blowing on the joins

We've now fitted two spare rubbers, manufactured two suitably fitting hangers and tack welded both on. The first one is perfect but we do need to alter the one nearest the tail pipe.

Its good to see something coming along so well, got a call out tomorrow at work to try and work out why SP2 for Server 2008 is refusing to finish configuring part 3 of 3 on startup, eventually timing out and then doing the same thing on restart.

Back to the XM, should be finished by the weekend ready for a drive to see the sights of Dorset (including zig zag hill

) with Toby_HDI.

what you do with the alarm is put the key in the ignition, input the code and simply press the alarm button on the dash when it goes off - this will silence it and switch it off.

The plip doesn't work on the other key.

its a work around for the time being at least.

We finished off the exhaust this evening and fitted it. Quite pleased with that job, heres a picture of the home made silencer.

Here's one of the XM in all her glory, I can't help but grin sometimes when I think that I've actually got a 2.1 TD XM with a manual box and a decent trim level
