Winter tyres are a good idea Kev,

I saw a short piece in this month's Practical Classics speaking of a move by Pirelli to make winter tyres mandatory in the UK as it is in other parts of the EU.

I can see a lot of sense in this but it might not carry so much weight as a sensible idea for being suggested by a tyre company who would stand to make a tidy little profit out of it...

I'm not short of rims for them...

Like the picture Kev,

Good to see you again and have a chat, even if the weather was terrible.

Jim, I can assure you my Activa wheels are still on the car. Well 3 of them, the other is in the boot with a punctured tyre.

in my opinion the mk2 wins for the ease of, put it on, leave it alone, especially on longer journeys where it might rain then stop then start again etc... The mk1 you'd have to move the stalk (shock horror i know) but i do agree a similar effect can be had, just a bit more faffing.

Cars are looking good btw :)

Very good picture, all cars looking good, shame the Activa is hiding away!

Toby, your coupe looks very nice there. I picked up a brochure for the 406 coupe this weekend. Definitely one of the best looking cars.

The XM has variable intermittent wipers, they are a very good idea. However i prefer my auto wipers, they always work just when you want them, without having to do anything. Though you do need to keep your screen very clean.

Will you be getting a full set of winter tyres Kev?

I was looking at a winter tyre test recently, as id like some myself, they vary quite a bit. Though going by the tests they do give improved grip throughout the winter, not just in snow. I can't find any spare wheels for my car, so ill have to swap tyres if i get some. Though £120-£150 each for decent ones is steep!

Its been a little while, I've not spent a huge amount of time on the forum as of late.
The rims are still sitting in the back garden awaiting cold weather tyres though I will be settling for a set of 4 Michelin Alpin A4s when I get around to ordering them this week.

Latest issue was with the steering wheel rotary connector in that the internal reel chewed itself up a bit and snapped. I bought an S1 connector and was rather disappointed when I opened the parcel as it looked like I was sent a part from a completely different car...turns out it wasn't.

My Xantia, being a rather late S1, has a connector that is almost the same in appearance as the S2 Xant one, only without the horn wiring and I assume a different connector for the radio controls, so pretty much a bit of a limited production run!

For the time being I've got one from a Xsara. This is identical to mine apart from the dashboard side of the radio control plug which I did attempt to convert but the soldering needs rechecking as not much is happening. At least I had an airbag so I could start driving again!

On a side note, me and a friend were in the mood for a bit of camera related mucking about with RUNN in the snow period - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhkPaEsBnbA

Its nothing professional, lots of camera shake and wooden acting so take it as nothing more than a couple of geezers having some fun!

He was holding it. It was only a small still camera so his arm wasn't aching too much

You'll have to get one of those camera mounts with a suction mount for the side of the Xant!

Quite a still arm that though, obviously proves your Xantia is riding well

Not been too active here there or anywhere on the interweb recently!

Not a lot to report on the Xantia front, or any other side of it for that matter...oh dear

Me and my parents took advantage of the weather and went for a good old drive along the north Devon coast today. Its not somewhere I go often enough (once in maybe the last 3 years  ) its a great contrast from the gradual gradients around here and of course you've got the views across the Brizzle channel.

We made our way up to Minehead via the edge of Exmoor to then follow the A39 across. The A39 is a unique road especially at Porlock as it climbs up a 1 in 4 gradient in places around some hairpin bends (It makes you wonder where the A rating came from  ).

I've had to link to photos on other sites due to forgetting to put the memory card back in my phone...
Bottom of Hill Sign

Hill itself, the photo doesn't do it justice!

There's a gradual increase in gradient to start off with but when this 1:4 hits I didn't know whether I should be climbing up or crashing into this wall of tarmac

Suffice to say, the Xantia was stuck in 1st gear and the temperature gauge didn't like it much.

Soon after that we were travelling along a proper coastal road with a shear drop over one side for miles before marvelling at the valley of the rocks and Maddona's bra in Illfracombe.

All in all, a nice day out :)
