I've heard EGR described as like farting up your nose. What is it supposed to be for?

The purpose of EGR Richard, is to lower peak combustion temperature and thus reduce the levels of NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions. NOx is a major cause of acid rain (Nitric Acid) and in the lower atmosphere, can react and create ozone which is good at high altitudes but is an irritating polloutant at low altitudes.

Although a diesel is clean in regard to CO emissions, due to the high peak combustion temperatures, the diesel NOx output is worse than a petrol engine.

EGR lowers peak combustion by admitting a portion of exhaust gas into the incoming fresh air charge.

As NOx is not tested at MOT time, there is no problem in stopping up the EGR system. Easisest is to disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the EGR valve.

The cat on later diesels is there to further reduce NOx emissions by turning them into CO2.

I've had the EGR valve disconnected on my TD Xantia for years (and my present HDi Xantia for one year) without problems, but when I pulled the vacuum hose off of the EGR valve on my 2.0 HDi Berlingo the ECU picked it up and put the engine into limp home mode. Reconnecting the hose sorted limp home mode out, so you can try it and see what happens. When pulling off the hose make sure you plug the open end (use a small screw) otherwise it may affect other items such as the turbo boost.

i think why people dont get a result when just replaceing or cleanning the EGR valve, is the sensors in the intake track are fowled up with gunge/carbon, so you must clean any sensors as well,

but all tht said if the ECU will allow it just blank it oooooff

I understand the theory of th EGR system, but it's plumbing and application on a car is a mystery for me, I would also rather bypass such a weird thing.

Since seeing first hand the ghastly effects of the EGR I think they are detrimental to the engine at best. I would advise anyone and everyone to at least disable it from opening if possible.

deian, if you're asking for some pointers I'd be glad to help though I'm not sure how similar the ZX is to the xantia?

thanks for the offer! don't have the zx anymore, not sure if it even had an egr system, it was an old 1.9td, my micra has one, horrid little thing... with an egr system, i'm sure it's a cause of hesitation

does anybodythink main dealers are a bit expensive had a quote for he work to be done part is cheap labour at a main dealer is over £100 per hour and hey reckon mnimum 5 hours to fix it no other garage in my area will even touch the car so i have to get it done does anyone else think this is down right expensive

Main dealers are very expensive. Suppose they have to pay some kind of Tribute to Citroen.
If you can find a Citroen specialist in your area (they love Citroens, but don't like Citroen) then they would be cheaper, and probably better at the job too.

Problem is they are not always well advertised. The one I found in Cumbria wasn't on any web page for Citroen

That sounds expensive! Even the BMW dealers her only charge £88 per hour.

Where are you and someone may be able to recommend a citroen specialist in your vicinity.
