Xantia HDi SX Estate Valuation

Guy my BIL works with is interested in a particuar second hand late
s2 (2000 IIRC) Xantia estate - it's an SX 110hp HDi with 90k miles.
The car doesn't come with service history though and I'd be interested
to know if the clutch will need changing shortly or if it's already had
the swap done.

Add to this concern is AC that doesnt work but an otherwise presentable
car, what would a fair price be to start negotiations?

Sure, whilst it'd be handy to get it for £500, the late HDi's do fetch a
premium price and several on AutoTrader with dealers are around £1400
at similar mileages; is this a real price people had paid or want for theirs?

If it helps, my two pence worth

My Xantia is a 2000 X plater HDi 110. I bought it with around 133k IIRC

It had a couple of scuffs but otherwise a tidy car. Everything worked as it should. It's a SX model also.

I bought mine from an auction for £955 nearly a year ago now.

I'd not worry overly about the clutch Andrew. The Hydraulic Clutches fitted to these (same as the Activa and 2.1TD) can be perfectly OK whilst having what seems a very high bite point on the pedal. It is not a sign of immenient failure or a need to replace. It's just how some are....

If it does need changing, it's a similar job to the cable clutch fitted on other Xantias. Use a high pedal as a crafty bargaining point though

The aircon is a good bargaining point as well.

Do much tooth sucking and reluctantly offer £500 to take it off their hands despite the major and expensive work needed and then smile when the deed is done

Thanks Toby; my feeling is around the £1k mark! So, your price last year
was pretty good really; is it an estate too then as I'm sure this will raise
the value being arguably more practical?

Thing is, do I suggest looking at a 2.1TD instead of a HDi 110hp...
I know Jim and PeterN's feelings on this subject already so the 2.1
is better!?

What I deliberately omitted to mention is the seller's very optimistic asking
price that bears little relationship to reality and the current situation; for his
price, my BIL's mate could buy a C5...

No mine is not an Estate. If your feeling the 1k mark then your probs about right, I would say a little less. Sounds as if the seller is very optimistic.

As Jim says, the clutch can bite quite high, mine does yet it is fine. It's how they are I think - seller doesn't know that though

I've never driven a 2.1 (be nice to though to compare) so can't comment but the HDi is a great engine IMO.

Again, Jim hit nail on head, offer £500 to take it off his hands. I would say go no more than £900 at a push, depends how tidy it is.

No comment on the C5......

Certainly, in last couple of months values of nice cars have taken a massive
nose dive; there have been some nice late Xantiae well under the £1k
mark. There's that 2.1 Exclusive on ebay now that's worth finding out more
about...

Do they make brown paper bags big enough for C5's...

That could all change soon. Fifth Gear last night ran an item about the new taxation bands and offered ways of avoiding it. One suggestion was to have a pre-2001 car.

Expect to see prices in this sector rise very soon. The market for quite ordinary post-2001 cars that fall into the high tax bands will be the one the bottom falls out of. In fact better to take them straight to the freddies and weigh them in for scrap...

Paid £1100 for a 2000 Hdi Exclusive hatchback a couple of months back with 100k miles from a dealer.

Could have probably got a better deal elsewhere if I had time to look/wait but I needed a replacement pronto for my 2.1TD Exclusive that had just gone bang. Estates have always commanded a fairly hefty premium in the past but I'm not so sure these days.

He's in the land of wishful thinking if he's expecting that; going to be
a big disappointment coming for him!

Quick read through of this thread suggests I really am the 'see-him-coming-idiot'...

Anyhow, using Parkers as a guide, I bought a silver 2000 Xantia Estate Hdi 110 SX for £2150 from a private dealer three years ago, warranty included 120K on clock.

Two years ago, thinking I'd got value for money, I bought another, exactly the same, though black not silver, 1999 this time, similar mileage for £1700.

Very happy, good value motoring.. or have I been sold TWO pups

Most Xantia estates are dog rough - I know I looked at loads before I bought mine

. I paid £3k for a 2001X HDi 110 Forte 12 months ago, only 47k mind. It's now done 73k, and (if I cleaned it!) I would expect to have it up for £2250, and accept around the £2k mark for it (or maybe I'm pie in the sky

). So if it's a good un, then £1500 is not bad going - don't forget this is only a 7 year old car with an advanced diesel engine, that cost the thick end of £15k when new! If it's rough then £1500 is well over priced. You do need to factor in that the cambelt is due at 100k - and if you're planning it to keep it / do lots of miles then it really needs belt, tensioners, and water pump - and there's not going to be a lot of change out of £400 for that lot. The only other thing is to check it actually IS a 110 - I looked at plenty that were advertised as such but turned out to be 90s. Check under the bonnet for the second air hose running over the engine next to the pipe from the filter box.

The HDi 110, coupled with the hydraulic clutch and ML5 box is a revelation after the 1.9TD though - so relaxing to drive, but plenty of go when required (it does annoy those tail gaiters in their puny petrol engined cars in 30mph limits when you boot it coming out, and they just disappear into the mirror 8) )
