I'm better informed on the head gasket notch system now and the old gasket that came off (a 3-notch) is not the thickest as first thought. It's actually midway on a scale of 1-5 as opposed to the old 1-3 system.
Seeing as I've bought what is the thickest possible, the engine's going to suffer low compression problems, isn't it?

Maybe the CR will be down a touch but nothing to worry about Mike. The difference, in real terms, will be very small and a slighly lower CR may aid long-term reliability a tad
I think that was the gasket we used on Xac's car and that still flies!

As long as you have good glowplugs, you'll start OK Mike
I think they made a choice at build time as they have to be certain that the engine will perform correctly at the extremes of its range of use.
Using a thick gasket and dropping the CR might just cause you problems starting in the winter if you decide to move to Siberia Mike but if you continue to reside in Christchurch, I don't think you'll have problems and as you say, you can up the boost!
