Replacing Xantia rear ABS sensor

Post by andmcit »

I've changed front Xantia sensors without too much grief but as yet have
not had the dubious task of replacing the rear ones, until now!!

I have however witnessed a pal of mine resort to removal of the rear
swing arm (we're talking offside here) and actually wondered if that
drastic measure was strictly necessary. I believe it's a case of creating
the room to get a large grommet on the main sensor lead out of the
subframe?

I really don't fancy cutting up the lead of the old suspect sensor in case
there's a connection issue on it and it can see life again in the future,
seeing as I'm a bit of a magpie hoarder but that may be academic
anyway if it doesn't want to come undone off the arm/hub...

Been here with Xm's though and believe they're glued in on the rear arm.

Any pointers, words of wisdom anyone?

The sensor wiring is not glud on the Xantia - and you will find a connector plug on top of the subframe right next to the swingarm.

Disrupted sensors due to corroded cabling is however the most common problem. In really bad cases is seems no copper is left inside the cabling. It has transformed to black dust

Trust me, unfortunately I know where the sensor lead onto the loom is!!
I've had to splice a new length on the loom in hoping the damage was
the reason for the loss of sensor signal but finally got round to getting a
reading off the sensor which isn't giving anything.

The job I'm sure is 'easy' where in Haynes speak you simply "undo the fastening
bolt and remove the sensor from the swinging arm..."

with renewal fitting yadda yadda yadda...

The multiplug connector is now loose but I recall seeing the route navigated
by the lead drops into a space around the arm bearing end of the trailing
arm inside the rear subframe and there's no chance in hell it will feed out
or more importantly feed back in, especially where a tight grommet sits
on the subframe...

Please someone, tell me I needn't remove the rear trailing arm!!
Surely someone here has replaced a Xantia rear sensor!? If not, maybe
I'll have to get my camera and do a show and tell for this potentially
wicked little job!

I replaced them on both sides of a 93 Xantia I had and found the worst part of it was getting the connectors separated and off the clips that holds them to the subframes. I took off the exhaust box to improve access to the lefthand side and dropped the trailing arm by removing the long bolt, then a bit of string on the old connector block to guide back in the new ones.
