Vince, check out the deals you can get with a family railcard, it's £26 but you can use it all year and you can even get discounted entry in to some attractions by using the train. I wouldn't. Be surprised if you get your money back all in one go.

Thanks Steve, Linda has already pre booked tickets for us, so in the morning the train it is.

The drive today wasnt too bad, though it is quite a trek there and back. Surprisingly the Harry Potter studio experience was excellent! Id recommend it to anyone who is a fan. It is the actual sets of the movie with original props and costimes and streets used in the filming. Its a great day out.

Ivor the engine..i havent seen that in years 8-)

I wont bore you with further fuel stats, you get the picture im sure :) I did seriously think the guage had broken today so drove more heavily to try to get the needle to drop...it worked eventually, it wasnt broken just me driving too economically i think. £20 hastings to watford and back!

My wife is over the moon with the xm.....she is even talking of driving over to Paris euro disney next year?.....driving the xm through france sounds like bliss to me 8-)

Well, today was a nice trip out to the white cliffs of Dover.....what a great place. The weather was scorching and sunny too which was also nice.

On the way, a white van man gave the car the thumbs up, and also a biker pulled up alongside to have a look :) On the way down from the Dover visitors centre I passed a nice early white cx and gave them a wave as they drove past

Roads are great over to Dover from Hastings with some fast sweeping roads to waft along.....

Tomorrow we are going to Brighton for the day, it's our last day down here as we are setting off back up north on the Saturday morning....boo! I've blown a brake light bulb I think today so as there is a gsf here in st leonards, I'll nip out in a bit and check all fluids in etc to make sure I don't need anything else before we set off back up on the saturday.

I've done some serious mileage since we set off down here last weekend....it's been great getting out and doing so much driving on such nice roads. If you live in an area which is green and countrified consider yourself very lucky....concrete jungles are great in many respects, but not so great for relaxing drives...

Well we are back home again

Brighton was scorching weather wise and a bit of a trek from where we were staying....

The blown brake light bulb turned out to be the dash display having a flutter  everything works fine again now and the holiday driving spell is over.

Im not sure how many exact miles the xm did, but when i bought it it had 205K on the clock. Now it has 207K on it :) and has handled these miles without missing a beat =D>

I did have a nervous moment this morning when it had leaked a bit of oil overnight before we set off this morning, but it seems it only leaks when parked nose downwards on a slope overnight. I topped it back up this morning in Hastings and then checked it twice on the way back up to Manchester. It didnt use a drop at all, so perhaps a gasket leak somewhere?....either way its nothing drastic so ill get round to checking it out more thoroughly now that im back home.

This afternoon i gave the car a well done wash and brush up, and having just looked at some of the ICCCR pictures posted up and the condition of some of the cars there, its had to see how this xm will ever be at the same level of those machines...some superb standard cars there it seems :)

Thanks Mark

I made it up to the ICCCR today for a few hours....naturally i went in the xm and met up with some of the other guys up there..Chris, Kev, Steve and Matthew of the xm forum, I wont go into the amazingness of the cars overall there as you went didnt you.

Yes the xm looks tidy now that its been cleaned up, but im at a point where im thinking it might be best to leave the car "honest" ie showing the journey its been on in its life and resulting battle scars its picked up along the way. Its perhaps too high mileage etc to warrant trying to mint the car up which i reckon would cost in the region of about £1000 i reckon as it needs paint in some places.

Its an alien concept to me as i always mint up every car ive ever owned regardless of cost....i kind of like the idea though as once a car is flawless you are then trapped into the cycle of keeping it that way, which for a family daily driver takes increased time and commitment...that said you never know :P

Ill be at the cxm though and you can see for yourself

Looking forward to seeing you and the XM at CXM Vince :-D

Yes, there's something to be said for leaving the pantia of honest battle scars of a well-loved car in place. I'm a great devotee of just that as you know...

In fact I'd much rather look at an 'honest' well-used, well cared-for and well-loved car over a concours example any day. They have a personality those cars that are 'minted-up' and used only for shows sadly lack.

I totally agree Jim , they can't be wrapped in cotton wool and trailered everywhere . Never mind what you do they will always pickup chips , scratches etc . Can't wait for the Cxm :-D

Must agree with you on this - went on a Classic Car Run today and there were some oh so mint Fords on the run. Big money's worth Mexicos, Sports etc in pristine condition. Some of these fen roads are terribly bouncy and with me being in a Classic Mini with fat wheels didn't help matters however these grandad's in their Ford's were carefully nursing them at snails pace not to cause any damage!

One chap in a Mark 1 Cortina GT went into the distance of my rear view mirror along that road as he was nursing it so slowly down there. Flat out is the only way to drive a Mini...

Another owner totally refused to take his Escort down one road and went the other way!

They're fabulous condition cars but when you've got a car that is as clean underneath as on the top it must seriously take the enjoyment out of driving it...

Who cares if you pick up a stone chip? I managed to loose a numberplate screw on the Mini today which made me laugh...

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the XM at the CXM Rally Vince, not too long away now!

Don't take a Ford out in the rain it will dissolve  , sorry not a big lover of most of the old school Ford stuff , most of it is overrated junk , with exceptions of course . Drove a Mk4 Rs turbo years ago when I had a Bx16v , there was no comparison the Rs was terrible
