Engine mounts?

Unread post by XantiaMan »

How many engine mounts are fitted to my car? I've recently started getting a vibration through the car at fast idle (about 1100rpm), and the same sort of vibration coming on at about 33mph, which goes above 40mph, or if you accelerate a little harder. My feelings are its a loose or worn lower engine mount that is allowing excess rock to occur. Any thoughts please?

Hi Gareth,

There is one above the gearbox, another behind the O/S driveshaft and the top one near the cambelt. Take a look at the last one as they are prone to splitting, its also the easiest to examine  obviously support the engine from below.

Are they prone to splitting causing excess movement? What about replacements, easily available?

TIA

Yes they do split and therefore cause excess movement, I had one go on a ZX TD, IIRC GSF supply them.

I had a closer look today, one the cambelt end engine mount the centre section appears fine, but one of the rubber buffers which stops front and back rocking movement has completely gone. A quick test bodge with some phone cable and it solves the 35mpg wobble, and stops the wobbly idle too! So if anyone has a 2nd hand mount they want to part with, let me know.

The bush that has gone is one of the smaller type as seen in this picture, which appear to bolt on, although on my mount it looks like its moulded onto the top part of the bracket.

And here's the offending part, which according to the servicecitroen site, is available as a seperate part, or it has its own part number at least, so lets hope they have one in stock!

Went to the dealer ship today, part not in stock will be there Tuesday morning though, £21 quid inclusive. Should make a world of difference when fixed as its been going for a while. My temp cure of telephone wire wrapped viciously around the offending part seems to stop most of the wobble, got alot of miles to do for work on Monday so had to do something to stop the excess rock.

If the Stealer does not supply on Tuesday Gareth, try bonding a piece of rubber onto the bracket using Evo Stik until the replacement arrives.

Those bolt-on buffers are used in the diesel Pueueot 205.

Have you checked your lower donut mount? If the engine has been moving enough to detach the buffer, the bottom mount may well be on its way out.

Had a quick look yesterday as i removed my under engine cover and it looks ok, think i caught it just in time. I have found a bit of rubber thats used behind a bumper from a Maestro which will keep me going till the part arrives.
