Something I learned about Polly today....

When parked all day in full sun, draw the blinds across the panoramic sunroof... If you neglect to do this the car ends up hotter than a nuclear reactor in meltdown...

For once, under such a circumstance, I found the aircon to be a bit of a lifesaver...

It's been a long, long time since I've had a car with a working aircon and I'd grown used to not having it. I've been actively not trying to use Polly's as I know if I do I'll be spoilt and end up using it all the time...

I've also learned today the aircon must be used regularly to keep it in good condition... Now there's a good excuse to use it ;)

ALSO....use it in the winter, it dries the air for the first couple of mins before the car warms up....No misting (and keeps it in good order)

Yep! In fact I was saying the same thing earlier in another discussion viewtopic.php?p=768108#p768108 suppose it's obvious when you think about it: big greenhouse= hot in sunshine!

I too have only recently joined the "functional air con club" it's excellent for demisting as mentioned. In fact my C5 X7 is first car where I have sometimes needed to keep bringing the air con back on again as it slowly begins to condense a little with just blower only.

Like you I previously would have used it the absolute bare minimum but now try to engage it often to keep the system healthy. Sat at traffic lights, engine idling but unlikely long enough a stop to switch off completely: give the air con a run, more load helps an idling diesel warm up quicker so next benefit in my opinion.

AX looking very smart. Never before noticed that small bit of black plastic that I guess comes up with the boot lid, rather than being part of the rear bumper. Very odd!

Child seat is the "with a leg" type (rather than the overhead strap "top tether" type) - just to check, there's no underfloor storage in the rear footwells of Polly?
Worth checking the handbook with respect to child seat leg if not already done so?

It's just a piece of trim Matt!

No storage in her rear footwells but there is a massive covered storage area under the rear floor in the cargo area Matt... Handy for keeping stuff you don't want 'on show' when the back seats are down and the parcel shelf is out...

Polly spends most of her time with the seats down and her parcel shelf has gone into storage... She's used more as a posh van than a car :)

Sorry, yes I mean it is strange they made an "extra bit of bumper" on the boot lid.

I was curious about it again this morning and, thanks to https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi ... 080320.jpg the story gets an interesting twist!
Spoiler: show
Where's it gone!?! :)

I'd say it was unique to the Series 1 Matt but I'm not even sure of that... Could just be on the posh versions! All I know is it finishes off the rear of my AX very nicely :)

One nice thing about Polly is the very low sill at the rear, making it so easy to load/unload stuff...

With the screen being several miles in front of the driver Alasdair, there's no chance of demisting with a cloth so a bit of aircon assistance will be essential on those steamy mornings!

I have a demisting cloth on an extending handle, mainly for cleaning the screen as it is hard to reach the bottom but last winter the aircon seemed to go into hibernation and there was a lot of condensation.
I was about to have it fixed and it started working again.

:offtopic:

Where is a good source of drive belts Jim?
My son has dumped a load of tools here, including a lathe. Earlier this year a shelf collapsed and on it was a jar of sulphuric acid that splashed all over and onto the lathe's drive belt, potentially ruining it. I intend replacing it but have no idea where to start to look for one.

Excellent, thanks Mick.
Half hour walk :) translates as about two hours for me :(
I'll wait until I have the car back I think. I doubt he will want his lathe this year. Needs to buy a new house so he has somewhere to use it.

Belts for cars easy but for industrial equipment a bit harder, never had to but one before.

Assuming you have the old belt, damaged though it is, to take up there and I suspect they will be able to sort you out!! :-D

All sorts of belts were what the old agricultural supplies shops used to deal in. Once, every town had one. Now an endangered species... I miss them.

If you don't fancy a trip out Steve, eBay has a good selection of suppliers who will make you a custom belt. Despite the damage, I'm sure your old one is OK to get dimensions from.

Here's an example:

Just went for a look for it and it isn't there. I must have moved it somewhere for 'safe keeping until I need it'.
I have cleared out the utility room and moved loads of tools there and it hasn't made a dent in the room the lathe is in.

I did contemplate looking on eBay but don't trust my ability to get the size and spec right. Taking it up the road would be more reassuring.
It is literally three minutes drive away so not an arduous journey by any means and there is an ALDI there so can combine it with food shopping.

If you have lost the old belt Steve, you can measure the pulleys to get the right size so it's not a showstopper by any means...

Back to being likely to make a dogs dinner of measuring it.
