Let's not leave out our old friend Polychlorinated Biphenyl when talking about horrible toxins we've probably all snorted far more of than we want to think about over the years.
Pretty much every British made lighting fixture I've seen from the 50s-70s that was specified highly enough to include power factor correction used a PCB based capacitor - and the number of which I've found in fittings having started to leak is somewhat alarming.
Once you recognise the smell of it it's alarming how frequently you come across it still.

Asbestos was used in everything pretty much. It was even tried in concrete mixes but made the concrete fail earlier. All asbestos products were banned in 1999, but it doesn't mean a building after that date hasn't got asbestos. Can you imagine a supplier just getting rid of products at a loss! Not gunna happen. JIM if you need to change a fuse, wet the asbestos fabric first, that way you will reduce your exposure to air born fibres

Yep, been exposed to loads of that too Zel! I well recall destroying some classified equipment many years ago and smashing open large PCB-filled capacitors...Zelandeth wrote: 05 Aug 2023, 18:35 Let's not leave out our old friend Polychlorinated Biphenyl when talking about horrible toxins we've probably all snorted far more of than we want to think about over the years.

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
Poor Bluebell had to spend a weekend outside and she got really grubby as well as being a target for a few local birds...
I had to wash her today and clear my garage so she can go back in...
I hate leaving her outside in the weather and will henceforth not do so. Stuff awaiting collection/dumping that was previously keeping her out in the elements is now in the conservatory.
I'd rather have a conservatory full of stuff in transit rather than having to leave Bluebell outside...

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
An epic run in Salcey Forest yesterday
Gosh, it was hot. The one day we could all have done with it being a bit cool and damp and it was just the opposite... It seemed hotter under the tree canopy than it did out in the open. Not a breath of wind either... And the air was like treacle.
Despite the weather, it was a magical day out with loads of friends - these events are as much a social gathering as much as a run and much talking is done on our way round
I ran 8 laps of the course in the within the 6 hour time limit... I was hoping for more but deep conversations and the heat somewhat precluded that. It's wise to slow down when it's so hot...
Those of us who ran in excess of 28 miles declared we'd ran an ultra. Technically, 28 miles is not but woe betide anyone who wishes to disagree with us
Some consider an ultra is over 30 miles... But given the conditions...
No way I could I sensibly visit this forum yesterday. My brain becomes somewhat dysfunctional after such a run... It gets starved of glucose and reacts accordingly!

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
A packed day today
After a properly magical parkrun where we celebrated a good friend's 100th, I came home and gave Sally her yearly big service in readiness for her trip to Somerset next weekend via Stratford upon Avon where I'll be riding the Costwolds Sportive on Saturday and then travelling down to stay a couple of days with Alasdair and whilst there run the Bath Two Tunnels Half Marathon
I have a big crate of Xantia goodies for him...
I gave Sally another pre-MoT and all is good. She'll be booked in for it as soon as I'm back from Somerset.
I then spent some high quality time with my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. I rode to theirs on my bike in glorious sunny weather and on the way home got drenched
Still, it saved the need for me to have a shower when I got home
Tomorrow I'll be at Junior parkrun and then I'll be starting on my next big project - my garden. I'll be looking to make it more-or-less maintenance-free. A gardener I'm not and I have a less than zero interest in the subject. For the last 20 years I've just kept my garden reasonably tidy and done nothing useful with it except grow strawberries - well, not precisely as they grow themselves and need no help at all to thrive. I'm no longer making jam so they can now be thinned out considerably.
My paternal grandfather, my dad and now my eldest daughter are keen on the garden. With me it skipped a generation. I tried but failed... My fingers are not green and are the kiss of death to anything that grows unless it's something very tough and hardy.
Thoughts on what to do with my garden are much encouraged
