Just had a quick initial scan as you do, and I discovered that there is a sale on Wednesday down in Battle with a considerable number of clock related parts. This link takes you to page 7 of the catalogue where the first of the lots is listed and they carry on down the page and a few on page 8. Worth a look if you know what you are after!! :-D

Love the flowchart Steve 😀😂 Only problem is, WD-40 is not good for clocks... It dries out too quickly and whilst wet it attracts dust... I have some proper clock oil in a bottle supplied by a company called 'Time Restored Ltd' :)

Thanks Mick :D I'll be resuming work on the clock today and then I'll have a good idea as to what I may need...

Stay tuned for updates ;)

I think WD40 in all honesty isn't good for most things really - it's not best penetrating oil, it's not a good long term lubricant, etc.

But it's readily available and some folks seem to really like the smell!

I've a bit of a thing for buying the proper stuff for whatever the job:
Current "grease collection" includes general purpose, CV joint, copper grease, red rubber grease, ceramic brake grease, spray lithium grease.

So "clock oil" is right up my street! :-D

Wasn't a serious suggestion. Malcolm would have been livid.

:-D

I'm generally in agreement Matt... My favourite penetrant is Plus Gas and despite trying a luxury one that claimed to be more effective because it contained a freezing agent to 'shock' stubborn things into submission I found it inferior to good old Plus Gas... Been using Plus Gas for ever and a day...

WD-40 has its place for quick and dirty jobs where a quick temporary squeak fix is needed, something dirty and oily like a bike chain needs a quick cleanup or as a temporary surface rust inhibitor... These days I tend to use GT-85 but mainly because I scored a few cans very cheaply a while ago from one of the well-known discounters... A measure of how much I use it is that a can lasts me about five years...

Definitely in agreement about oils and greases...

(long story short, my Grandad was a hoarder and suspect these were "saved" from when he worked at the gas board. Recently began the mammoth task of clearing his garage. (Mostly junk - jam jar of bent, clearly second hand and very rusty nails anyone?) But occasionally useful stuff comes out the rubbish in there. Anyway have a full case!!! Of these to use from now till forever!)

I present my favourite penetrating oil!

Purely on the basis of its name alone!

Also, whilst taking pictures of old tat. Is there a market for "period" WD40?

Have a case of that too!

Yep, my dad was as bad Matt... Just what is it about jars of rusty nails  The usual answer to this question is 'The war...'

Loving that can of releasing fluid :-D

There's got to be a market for cans of vintage WD-40... The demand for old stuff is insatiable. The auction Mick and I attended showed that...

I'll bet there's a Facebook group devoted to vintage WD-40 too!

Been busy today... Cleaned up all the clock parts with great care. Just enough to remove all the old oil and dirt but not so much as to disturb the patina...

Then I did a trial dry reassembly of the main parts of the going and striking trains to check all was good ahead of final reassembly...

If you're sitting up again Matt remember an asking price is not a true indication of value, possibly just a chancer trying it on!! :-D

Anyone paying £80 for that deserves to be parted from his money.
