Vegan milk from vegan cows, what else?

I have a couple of vegan daughters, one of them a baker. They use vegan cheese. Some of it excellent, some of it less so.

Either soya or more usually, coconut oil Mick... I can only eat the coconut based ones.

They don't taste at all like coconut and taste of cheese :)

One magical vegan source of a very good cheese flavour is nutritional (deactivated) yeast :) I make some very tasty cheese scones with it :)

Unfortunately vegan cows seem to be a thing of the past. To 'promote' yield (beef, milk etc.) cattle were fed the remnants of livestock considered unfit for human consumption (ground up into small pieces and called Meat-and-Bone Meal (MBM)). THAT resulted in Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). WHEN will Mankind learn that Nature has had countless millennia to get things right while we have only had a few hundred years and we right royally foul things up.

This disgusts and horrifies me James...

It's not the reason I'm vegan and but there is no way I can condone any unnatural practices on farm animals intended for human consumption...

As said before, I'm vegan due only to a myriad of food intolerances and allergies. I'm still happily wear leather, sit on leather seats and enjoy sheepskin rugs :)

I have never enjoyed eating any kind of meat or animal product since I was a little kid... I used to have to literally force it down after being made to believe I'd be ill and not grow properly if I didn't... I was so happy when I discovered a largely vegetarian diet was quite OK :)

Fish, but not other seafoods, I could eat and cheese and eggs too... I loved cheese and eggs but my biological systems decided they didn't so now I can't :( Nor will my biology allow me to eat fish now either...

Apart from practices in meat production, fish farming with Salmon is one of the worst. It has polluted our western coasts and Islands around Scotland for 40 yrs now. The practice is abominable with pesticides poured into sea and freshwater to kill fungus and parasites due to mass concentration of fish. Hundreds of thousands of fish are lost each year due to disease. Did you know that they use a colour wheel to determine the shade of red or pink that the fish have in the packet or slab? The colour is added to their feed.
As we speak 50,000 farmed Salmon are entering Scotlands rivers to interfere and breed with Wild Salmon, thereby weakening the gene pool of the natural species. Escaped from A MOWI farm near Mull of Kintyre. This is a company owned by Norwegian millionaires who come to "poor countries" like Scotland Chile and Uruguay and ply their dirty trade. Zero waste collection. Think about that. What producer of anything operates on that? Cages dropping their filth of waste and toxins onto the sea floor along with massive and magnified sea lice that drop off their fish and then attach to wild fish, killing them. Sand eel are sucked up with giant hoses at sea, hundreds of miles away to make pellets to feed these mutant Salmon. You can guess what that does to local bird and fish populations?

Thought provoking posts James and Lexi, and James sums it up nicely.

"WHEN will Mankind learn that Nature has had countless millennia to get things right while we have only had a few hundred years and we right royally foul things up."

Next time I see one of those "sustainable" fish farms being featured on country file, and is presented as being different from the rest as they usually do, I will view it with a more critical eye.

BSE probably came about because cattle were fed MBM made from sheep that had contracted Scrapie, which is a form of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy. The obvious clue is in the name; TRANSMISSIBLE! Intelligent people who are not driven by financial rewards would have asked "What would the consequences be if we force fed livestock feed contaminated with disease (even if it is not from that type of livestock)?", with the probable answer (until proven otherwise) that the livestock fed that contaminated feed developing a form of that disease. Unfortunately those intelligent people were probably shouted down by the greedy profiteers who could make a quick buck and then (when BSE reared its' ugly face) say "We never thought that could happen".

Expensive initially but very cheap to feed... They eat rubbish

Seriously, the 1.5 tonne one I got cost £165 including collection... Saves a lot of hassle booking trips to the tip, loading the car with crap and risking damage, especially punctures, in the process.. Our tips are not at all friendly now and if you have a lot, as I would have, they are unhappy, believing you are a commercial business trying to sneak a load in for free. They've also banned trailers...

And even if the tip is deserted, if you have not pre-booked - a ballache of the highest order - they won't let you in...

And then they wonder why fly-tipping is such an issue around here

Good news today, Robyn's C1 has passed her MoT :-D With an advisory on droplinks...
