I'll take loads of pictures Mike but be aware the procedure between an S1 and an S2 is a little different.

First job on an S1 is to remove the steering wheel. This step is not needed on an S2...

Yesterday I attempted to replace the blown bulbs in Gabriel's instrument cluster...

99% successful. I missed one  So I have to do the job again today...

I can't stand it not being perfect...

Mike, I've got some pictures of the job I'll post up later...

Dash/instrument cluster bulbs done :D

Very important to test every bulb before fitting and then jiggle the bulb in its holder when testing just to be sure it's all good.

then test the instrument cluster illumination before final reassembly of the dash...

Now checking for what I hope is historical water ingress in the rear. I recall Zel having a real battle with this a while back...

I have a couple of replacement cooling fans on their way to me from a fellow forum member to replace at least one that's duff...

Still very much enjoying fettling her :D

I'll do the instrument cluster bulb replacement as a 'how to' later today... Right now the weather is too nice to be indoors stuck over a PC except when drinking a cup of tea; which is what I'm doing now!

I *think* I solved the water ingress problem...never actively noticed any getting of late anyway! Never really did work out 100% where it was actually coming from!

Your dash story reminds me of one afternoon where I did a similar job in a coach (including the seven hundred and fifty-six switches), only to discover when I turned the headlights on after a brief moment of headscratching that the guy we ordered the lamps from had sent 12V rather than 24V lamps and the whole lot went pop within a couple of seconds...I used some of my really *good* swear words that day...

I think the problem is solved Zel as I reckon I now see only historical artefacts..

I've left the back seat bases out so that all can dry thoroughly and I can keep a very easy eye open for any further ingress. I don't need back seats...

Oh dear, that was terrible on the bus dash  I think I'd have invented a whole new set of profanities if it were me ;)

Off out for a decent run in Gabriel in a few moments... Lovely day for it...

I replaced a bulb on mine (took it from the oil level warning and put in the ABS light as the oil one always goes off even when full), stuck it all back together but couldn't check them easily as it was bright out. I'd ended up with another one blown and two that come on if you smack the top of the dash!!

What size are they Jim? As I best buy a handful and get the wheel back off :(

I cannot remember the type, but (after reading how time consuming the job was) I bought about 50, and replaced EVERY lightbulb (on both my Xantias when I got them). I do know the pair in the heater control have a very short captive base, but the rest are capless. Just make sure they work (use a multimeter) before you put everything back together. First time I had one with a poor connection, so the light didn't work. Got that sorted, and learned from it.

Stu, they're R286 bulbs and best purchased in bulk on eBay such as this one.

As James says, test every one very thoroughly before fitting. I use a small battery and see them light up. I don't trust a multimeter for this..

Wiggle the bulb in the holder too...

I'll get my 'howto' done as soon as I can but in London at them moment doing some bloody horrendous IT training
