Precisely Davie, I totally and utterly agree.

The things every car should have are airbags, abs and aircon. That's enough for me.

I don't even think aircon is an essential in a basic car Mike. How many days a year, honestly, is it needed in the UK? It's would be nice right now but windows wind down and a C1 fan on full-pelt produces plenty of thrust..

I'll agree on ABS though...

What the C1 doesn't need though is PAS. It's so light it makes the Xantia feel positively heavy!

It's not just the cooling element though is it Jim? - the "conditioning" bit is just as important. It filters a lot of crap out the air - especially pollen, which makes it invaluable to hayfever sufferers (Adriana suffers badly with it), the ability to demist an entire car pretty much instantly , and all the other benefits it brings. I'd not have a main car without it now, don't think I have had for more than 15 years now. Of course keeping the interior at a nice ambient temp also aids concentration and the ability to drive properly.I have it on pretty much constantly in the mobile greenhouse. It doesn't seem to have much effect on economy.

The C1 has a pollen filter Mike

I must confess I'm not a great lover of aircon. I have to work in an air-conditioned office and I hate it. That colours my view somewhat.

I'm a natural outdoor fresh-air sort. Conditioned air is not fresh. I do not thrive indoors.

Point taken on demisting. I find that handy perhaps twice a year!

Oddly I don't like aircon anywhere other than in the car.

It has its occasional advantages in other places... or disadvantages. Haven't quite worked out which yet :-)

In the office, at least it takes away the smell of those who have soap allergies..

I remember cleaning the internal B-pillar trim of cars driven with windows down, no AC. It was always dirtier than an air-conditioned car; that "fresh air" is clearly not without sooty muck. Seatbelts get similarly sullied.

The XM has gone to a new home and very annoyingly developed an LHM leak on the way very far up North  I'm really rather upset about it  :(

I can only think that I must have disturbed something when replacing the strut tops although testing after fitting never revealed a problem. The most likely source of the leak is likely to be a strut leakage return pipe. These are rubber jobs that attach to the side of the strut and are notorious for perishing. They're easy to replace.

Quite possible the disturbance hastened one of them on its way...

Always happens on the rare occasions when I sell a car

In other news, I drove Chris's Activa for a fair distance yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Mine seems very flat in comparison and it's quite a revelation how that extra bit of power and urge makes the car so much more pleasant. I'm now planning, after years of resisting, to fit a manual boost controller to mine...

I ran the V6 up to the National yesterday afternoon. It was a little reluctant to start and ran on five for a bit but once warmed up was fine. I need to do a service and check plugs. In all the time I've had that car I've never checked plugs in nearly 30,000 mile so they must be due!

I'm off work all this week so servicing of both Xantias will be done.

The National was good this year. Very enjoyed and at an excellent site even if it was in the middle of nowhere!

Got a fantastic little birthday present..

A fan that plugs into a computer USB port on the end of a swan neck. One blade of the fan has a couple of rows of LEDs on it. When the fan is on and spinning it displays a working clock :-D

Very clever!

I think you're right Simon. I was expecting it to automatically pick up the time from the laptop but it doesn't.... So yes, unlikely to be compliant but it's a great toy and keeps you cool during heavy forum posting sessions :D
