Yesterday was good. Chris(570), his little King Charles Spaniel, Crumpet, and I decided to take a run down to North Devon. No real reason, but just on a whim we called in to see Kev (Red Dwarfers) to see if he'd like the 2.1TD engine that just happened to be in the boot of Chris's Xantia. Kev seemed pleased to have it seeing as the engine out of his XM was just a little wrecked.

I had a good chance to look at the damage and I believe it was destructive detonation that caused the mayhem. All glowplugs were fully intact but the clue for me was some cratering (like lunar craters on the moon) in the adjacent cylinders and combustion chambers. I would think the failed needle lift sensor caused the timing to remain over-advanced for long periods which led to the detonation.

On the way back we took a short detour and called in to see Dad.

I must say Chris's Xantia is excellent. the performance and ride belies the 228K it has done and it really was a pleasure to travel in and to be a passenger with a very competent driver.

We are of the opinion that Kev should have an Activa as we found some roads that were classic Activa territory. They were fun in an HDi but it an Activa they would have been serious fun. One such is the B3226 between South Moulton and Crediton...

It was good to see and have a trip out along some equally fun roads in Kev's GSA...

Today PavlosV6 called around to replace his other strut leakoff pipe on his V6 Xantia and to fix a split hose on his cruse control... His car is looking very smart for CXM. Sadly mine aren't and due to work commitments next weekend it's highly unlikely any of mine will be spruced up for the show. They will attend muck and all..

Whilst Paul was doing his bit I finally go round to freeing off the seized boot lock on my XM. I guess the boot lock is hardly ever used and seizes up through lack of use. I tool the lock assembly right out and did the deed on the bench. It's all nicely free now and that's another small job stuck off the list...

The Activa is in daily use this week and I note she's a bit firm in the rear. As soon as I can I really must check her spheres as I fear her centre hydractive may be a little flat...

Gosh, a moth since I last updated this

CXM has been and gone in that time and unfortunately it started something of a downward spiral for me and I'm only just starting to crawl out of. The reason why I've not been active on here.

The time from CXM until now has been very busy on the family front involving daughters going to Uni and funerals in Somerset.

I'm totally out of touch ion what's been going on here and I'm not even going to try to catch up on what's been happening. I'm sure I'll get a gist of what's needed to be known soon enough... If there is anything you might think I should know about then PM me...

I have seen the thread concerning XAN71A and should point out that I bought the plate direct from Richard on the strict understanding that I would only have the plate if the eventual purchaser of Goldie didn't want it - as was the case. Had a purchaser came forward who wanted car and plate together then I'd have withdrawn my offer.

Car-wise I've done practically nothing recently. I even had to send Robyn's 207 into the local garage to have a CV boot replaced. Truth is I've barely been in the workshop recently.

I did a little at the weekend with great difficulty. I checked over the Activa for it's MOT today and clearly did a lousy job because it failed on a wishbone bush. Not the 'P' bush but the opposite one.

It's a ******* job on an Activa but luckily a specialist is visiting on the weekend who will do the job for me. No way am I up to a wishbone bush just yet...

The rear wiper failed on the XM over the weekend and I thought it would be an easy fix. I thought it might be the intermittent wipe relay and assumed it was in the tailgate as on a Xantia. No it's not. I eventuality found it was located in the passenger-side fuse box and basically functionally inaccessible. I even removed the glove box to try and get at it but no, that did not help at all. I can see a quarter of the relay but that's it. Oddly though in all the poking about the rear wiper suddenly started working and has been ever since... Typical XM...

So how do you get at the relays above the fuse box? I can't see how for the life of me...

Anyway, I'm back. I must take it easy still and slowly for the foreseeable so don't expect me to be my old self just yet...

Your absence is really noticed, I was getting quite concerned that you hadn't made an appearance on the forum for quite some time, so I knew you must be going through one of your poorly periods.

One hopes. Just heard news today I've been placed on a 12-week course of graded exercise therapy (GET) starting in October. Those that know these things claim my level of fitness and weight are now contributory factors and over the next 12 weeks I must get fit and loose weight by swimming, gym work under supervision and lots of walking along with a carefully controlled diet... Apparently I look like a snake who's just consumed a big meal at the moment...

When being initially assessed for suitability to undertake the course of GET I was asked to name my most important reason for wanting to get fixed. I somewhat jokingly and a bit tongue in cheek said to help be be able to do much more on cars than I can do now.

To my surprise this made it to the official report on me and when I questioned it they all agreed it was a most laudable reason as what we do for leisure and recreation is a very important factor in our well-being.

I'm looking forward to it. I am told I'll still have to take care but should be able to do more for longer and that'll be excellent...

Over the past year I have got a bit rotund from doing very little physical really Richard - compared to how I was a few years back...

I am so unfit. Two lengths of the pool is my limit at the moment... I will get fitter... And loose the gut...

Amazing how many are at our pool at 06:30... All oldies like me and I guess there for much the same reasons...

Have you thought about cycling Jim? Its kinder on the knees than running and you can travel further as well

I often build it into my work days where i can by riding to and from work, have a shower and breakfast at work. Saves some fuel pennies and water/electric pennies as well Not a lot but every bit helps the chevron based issue

Glad your being active in your self repair though, have you thought about getting a BOL on the human body to see if it covers it or just refers you to another BOL

I was thinking of cycling just this afternoon funnily enough Adam... It could be good ad arguably you don't look such a prat cycling as you do running... Plus you can free-wheel on slopes...

I don't trust BoLs for cars, let alone one for the body. I expect it somewhere recommends Cyanide as a health supplement... Maybe fro an undertaker they are...
