sorry about your fur related news Jim :(
My family cat used to be 7months older than me and died when he was 19yrs old as his body just slowly shut down :( When he was younger he could make a 7foot brick wall with a good 1'+ long rat in his mouth and still land fine and go back for more! We used to find them lined up at the back door like a display for us in the morning and he hardly ever touched them! it was like a sport for him, once it was dead he wasn't interested. Semi-live birds in the house used to be fun as well but he was a well built cat being half farm cat half Persian he often scared Alsations and bulldogs away :) I remember a neighbour (one of those types...) had got a pitbull i think it was. Our cat was sat in the middle of the street a quiet cul de sac, and the neighbour brings his dog out for a walk going to go right past him. Dog is going absolutely mental as our cat just sits there as if to taunt him... The dog starts pulling the young guy towards the our cat. When they get within about a metre our cat stands up, furrs up and hiss'es loudest i ever heard him do at this dog. Dog quickly runs to the otherside of its owner trying as much as it can to drag him off down the street ASAP! I piddled my pants for ages at that as our cat just sat back down absorbing the world going by...........

Now that was some cat you had there Will :-D

That's one thing I do admire about cats; how they never let others get the better of them and show extreme restraint... It's like they have a well-developed air of superiority and know it.

I like dogs greatly but have never owned one nor had anything much to do with them but I'd have thought dogs would have learned to stop trying it on with cats long ago. They never win and just end up looking silly. Older dogs do seem to get the message sometimes.

My old cat is 13 now and going very strongly indeed. In our family is a cat that's a few months older than our youngest daughter and still going well. They can live to a right old age and I guess that must be down to how much rest they get and their laid-back (out?) attitude to life... We can lean a lot from cats :)

That's no worries Mike. It's the FCF after all

Actually a very interesting drift :) How do you know cat food tastes of nothing? personal experience? I know it stinks and sometimes it makes me want to retch when feeding mine.

Cats are fascinating creatures. I'm no real lover of them but I've always had a cat and life just wouldn't be right without one in the house. My old girl is a real character. She lives for food, warmth and winding me up - the latter she does very effectively and knows limits and exactly which buttons to push to provoke me into the action she desires..

Which lends well to the theory that cats (and in fact all domesticated animals) are still kittens at heart. cats especially have a lot of what we'd expect from a baby!

As for feline intelligence. No, not as we understand intelligence and in fact I think sometimes cats are rather stupid and thick with little capacity to learn. Something I also think about a vast majority of dogs although some dogs appear to be remarkably intelligent in some ways.
Cats have a little capacity to learn - not a huge amount in my experience. For example. Sam is 3. He used to be scared of the vacuum cleaner and hairdryer. Now he happily pushes the vac around, and lets us dry his hair with the dryer. One of our cats is 5. Despite Adriana using the hairdryer and vacuum most days, she is still terrified of both of them, even though they've never threatened her at all. She simply hasn't learnt. I think cats are programmed automatons that are very adaptable, but not hugely intelligent. I've had 11 cats of my own over the years, and there's been more in the family. They're all much of a muchness, bar some "personal" traits. We had a large tabby that used to delight in chasing away an Alsatian that lived up the road. The first time it happened, the big dog had cornered our new kitten outside my mum's garage. Bones (so called as he was a bony stray when we got him) came storming out of the house, fur up, yowling, spitting, lashed a big gouge out the stunned dog's face, then as it turned and ran, chased it, making deathly noises, for about 100yds up the road. Great cat. Succumbed to poisoning too we think sadly, I just found him dead in the kitchen one morning, he'd be about 5.

Cat food - yes, it used to be one of my party tricks when I was bored and people needed a shock to liven them up. Walking in, eating cat food out of a can with a fork really freaks people out. It stinks, but it's really, really bland. The biscuits are even worse, some of them smell quite nice, like crisps do, but they are also completely bland. I guess cats must get "taste" with their noses..

It is said that cats long ago learnt to mimic the tones of a crying baby when they were first domesticated. This is why humans tend to do stuff for them. It's a natural subconscious response to a miaow of a cat. If you hear a wild-cat miaow, it sounds nothing like a domestic cat.

Reminds me of a BBQ I went to a few years ago where a certain wag decided to swap standard party nibbles in bowls for dried cat food, it took about half an hour with the bowls almost empty before someone realised what they were snacking on

Not much been happening on the car or any front really. I've been concentrating on work, as that pays the bills, and not much else really.

I went to take the Activa out the other day and found she had a flat battery - not used enough  It's fine now after a recharge. V6 goes well although one rear door central locking motor has packed up. it'll unlock but not lock. Sian found that out for me and did a good impromptu alarm test at the same time

All cars are seeing little use now and that will be the case for the foreseeable future. As I can no longer sensibly maintain three cars to the standard I wish I have taken the hard and heavy decision to let one go. The choice was open at the start but after much cogitation, thoughts, pros and cons and test drives sadly the XM is the one that'll be going. She's for sale and details are in the For Sale/Wanted bit of the forum.

It is a very reluctant sale but unfortunately, given prevailing circumstances, one that must be made. I'm sure those who know me well will understand why I've made the hard decision I have.

Anyway, two Xantias will keep me more than well occupied I'm sure

This is sad news Jim, however I'm sure people understand why. Your health must come first - but, seeing as space doesn't really seem to be an issue, why don't you SORN the XM and fiddle with it as and when you feel fit? It's not worth *that* much, and it would be a shame to have done all that work on it then not get the benefit..

SORNing is a good thought Mike but in my experience cars deteriorate terribly when they're not being used and it's something I've noticed with both my Xantias which have spent long periods not being used in the past.

On balance, I'd much rather the XM went to a good home and was enjoyed rather than sitting festering somewhere on SORN.

Don't worry about me not having enough to play with. I have a few jobs planned on both the V6 and Activa that will keep me amused come the better weather and then there's the major garden makeover...
