As Jim and Dickie know, when I tried to start the car with a flat battery, the rev counter needle flipped right around the other side and had stayed there since. I was advised a small wire through the trip counter button hole can bring it back round but I abandoned that idea as I realised I was scratching the dial face in my attempts. I managed to move the needle up to about 4/5 O'clock but it soon dropped back down
Funny thing happened though, on restarting the car, it's now working Which is nice as I didn't fancy the alternative fix.
Cheers Jim & Dickie.

This happened to a mate of mine as well on his Toyota Surf.
As he found out later, when he had a DVD player fitted, the numpties who fitted it hadn't put the battery connectors back on properly, and one on one of the batteries was hanging off, so probably effectively giving the same symptoms as yours (flat or low charge).
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why this happens?

My 1.9TD is the same, it happened once before but corrected itself, however now it's been like it for 12months and unless their is a simple fix.... it can stay like it!!
