Not specifically but many times turned full circle (both forward and reverse) and never noticed any ticking.

To recap all the symptoms; Since I've owned the car it can judder when pulling away quickly or aggressively from standstill and can begin banging/hopping if allowed to wheelspin (clutch fully engaged). This I've learnt to avoid by driving sympathetically; lower revs (often idle is enough) and gentler clutch engagement.

A few months back, when In reverse uphill, it juddered very badly (possibly due to the higher revs required?).
Now, Even with no incline at all, but with near to or full steering lock I get judder and then the impression one wheel is maybe being dragged sideways which I associate with the "hopping" effect.

Whatever the cause is, I'm pretty sure it begins at the point when the clutch initially bites (slipping).

Sounds like the ride height is wrong to me. My TD estate was horrible for this, as was my Activa and one of the XMs.

Interesting. Not a job I relish but a little less painful than a new clutch!

You get a gold star, Mike.

Front should be 129 - 146mm
Actual measured 160mm

Rear should be 386 - 403mm
Actual measured 470mm

These are rough measurements though (awkard angle to measure/view from) but good enough for an appraisal imo. Trouble is, without a lift I'm not even going to consider the job myself.

Eventually, I've now set the ride height (thanks to a work colleague of a friend who owns a pit!) as per Citroen's instructions but sadly the clutch still judders.

However, it is clear the front HC is sticking (despite a good workout and lubing) and I suspect the rear dogbone will likely pop off it's very badly corroded steel ball at the slightest jarring.
Also disappointing was seeing the front fluid leaks in more detail and worse than I'd expected; Oil from the turbo oil feeld base and LHM from the from the pressure regulator/accumulator component.

Breaking News:

After clocking up just over 143,000 miles I ventured out today and was followed by billowing clouds. Pulled into a layby and confirmed my suspicions of terminal head gasket failure. Turned around and parked her up for the last time.

Not sure what I'm going to do with the Xantia now. Suppose I'll have to scrap it as I don't have the resources to break it for individual spares. Anyone here interested in it, it's almost complete and still starts (except I'll be keeping the battery).

I only delayed the inevitable Jim. It came to me just as sad.

You and me both Mike :-D

I've saved/delayed the end of a lot of Xantias in my time....

As well as a lot of other stuff.. Most of what I have and love falls into that category. My C1 and bikes being notable exceptions...

Xantia is now ready to be cleared off site. Sieems silly, but it having to go has made me a bit sad, part of me wants to keep it and redo the HG etc.

It's been eon's since I last weighed in a car and it's proving more difficult just getting a response from "we want your old car" advertisers, so I don't know what to expect - hope I don't have to pay - even better they pay me scrap value - but it's got to go regardless (sniff).

Mike, I know exactly what you mean... You and that Xantia have had a lot of adventures together.. I felt the same with my blue V6 but at least a lot of that one lives on in my Activa V6 conversion...

I can now close this chapter in my book of cars as the xantia went to her new home tonight. It actually started up ok and was driven away as the scrappies forgot to bring their ramps, though without coolant not sure if they made it back to base ok.

I'm tempting to go see it one last time as I suspect it'll be entered in the local banger races before getting depolluted and crushed. I'm sure it would make a fair gladiator in the arena.
