Don't worry Mike, if it was the dreaded D-word you'd have not remembered your login details to this forum so on that basis I pronounce you sound of mind

Good point Malcolm
On Saturday a good friend described me as 'nutty as a fruitcake' and 'dysfunctional' amongst others but she did admit I wasn't as mad as a March hare
So yes, maybe a green blood and sanity are not quite comfortable bedfellows

Re: Latest purchase blog
All I know for sure is; The rate at which I find myself leaving my flat only to return a few minutes later because "I forgot something" is on the increase. I reckon I'd forget my head if it weren't bolted on. Or my balls if they weren't in a bag. Anyway....
£20 pulley was sent (FOC) Monday PM and arrived bright n early Tues AM and fitted before midday. Car is now running again but a few more "issues" have cropped up.
It's plain to see the crank pulley is inflicting a slight wobble on the aux belt (the cambelt seems as true as before). At idle in traffic, there is a noticeable rythmic engine vibration which I would guess is in harmony with said crank wobble (though I could be wrong).
But even more strange is, now from stone cold starting the engine first settles into a soft, quiet and smooth idle - too smooth, similar to a small 4-stroke motorcycle petrol engine! Within a few seconds, the engine then exhibits the noisier, rougher diesel-sound of cold-start hunting I've come to expect before quickly warming up enough to idle normally.
Additionally, while under the car, I noticed some green fluid leakage off a hose from the pressure regulator/sphere unit. I've wiped the area clean to try and ID the source which at first guess I'd say is coming from the end of the cylindrical part of the regulator.
It's almost creepy as if the Xantia is responding to my search for a replacement car and is refusing to go quietly or cooperate and last out her final months with poise and dignity.

Mike, That noise issue sounds like the pump is not timing correctly, almost as if the needle lift sensor is intermittent. The Lexia will confirm..
If the crank pulley is wobbling it's not going to last long...

Re: Latest purchase blog
Yes, lexia was showing a recorded intermittent lift sensor before the pulley change, I could actually tell when accelerating hard and previously thought I was getting fuel starvation. Never noticed any idle differences though I do usually have music playing and the noisy belt tensioner drowned out all but the noisest sounds anyway.
I re-checked the crank pulley today and it looked fine. Maybe it's a perspective thing as any wobble I noticed yesterday would have been mild otherwise I'd be fearing it seperating soon too. Time to get the chalk out methinks.

Re: Latest purchase blog
Checked the lift-sensor wiring yesterday and cleaned the connectors using "bright spark". No faults logged during run to hospital today so maybe that was all it needed for that intermittent problem (open circuit).
Can't find my chalk to mark the crank pulley but will be keeping an open eye (and ear) as usual.

Re: Latest purchase blog
I found it easiest to place a spanner on the pulley bolt and wedge the end against whatever's nearby to jam against (can't recall the exact part - wishbone? torsion bar?). Very briefly crank the engine (obviously not allowing to start) to free off the bolt. Once loose, I used an exhaust/scaffold type clamp as puller, using the pulley bolt as the extractor.superloopy wrote:Mike ... did you change the crank pulley yourself?

See here for illustrations of what/how the puller works http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... er#p161512" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Latest purchase blog
Some extraneous pulling going on here methinks.
No, I haven't had a pulley fail on me for a long time. Think the last was on the white MKI I took to Jim many years back (should see the photo of that one!). Yes, any suspect pulleys should be closely monitored or replaced for peace of mind but I'm now confident my current pulley is still good and will likely last way past my ownership.

It's easy. I'll just rename you as follows: SuperMike, NorthernMike and CrankyMike
