It looks like I'll be getting this Xantia back on the road a little sooner than anticipated as I've just sold the Vauxhawful Ashtray and am otherwise car-less now.
Once I've arranged insurance (I hate shopping around for insurance), I'll be up the post office for tax and enjoying my 50ppl fuel along with the improved ride - shame the A/C's Fubar'd as it'll surely be stiffling with all that black interior. But I bet that won't stop me smiling as I get re-aquainted with the unique Citroen experience. I can't wait.

Hi Jim, me and sunroof Xantia don't get along so no, no sunroof's here. But at least I can open the passenger window at whim without risk of careering off the road, unlike a certain ex-car of mine
I replaced the accu sphere yesterday but unlike my introduction to sphere replacing, an oil strap wrench didn't work this time. The chisel method did though.
Q. If an old sphere holds about a litre of LHM, does that indicate it's burst and is just scrap?

If it's got gas in it, then when you remove it and expose it to just 1atm pressure then any LHM should be ejected as a spray (unless you've lost so much gas that it's less than ~15psi
If it pours out when the sphere is held with the hole to the ground, but not when it's upright, then it's a split sphere.

I was prepared for the spray shower but it didn't happen and only when the sphere was inverted did the LHM fall out so I guess that means it's punctured. Hardly surprising as, on high setting,the regulator was ticking like a fully wound clockwork monkey with cymbals.
Sorry to learn of your impeding eviction - that was the biggest problem I found in the private rental sector and with the rediculous fees agents charge, it cost a fair bit to move!
I eventually got lucky and ended up staying in the same house for 10 years before my co-tennant gave notice on my behalf.

Thanks to everyone that has given me support and encouragement over the years, I am now happy to announce;
At last, the car is back on the road as I've just bought the final legal requirement - road tax.
RANT> Bloody rip-off that is. They put the price up to offset carbon emissions yet refuse to use the money for that purpose. As a result, our goverment fail to meet EU targets and subsequently get fined - and where does that fine money come from? Yep, more tax! <RANT
There is a silver lining of course;
The joy of driving a Xantia TD again. And on veg oil too!
I love the torque of this engine - so lazy yet capable. Even with a brimmed tank and a further 100L or so in the boot, it pulls well.
There's still some niggly jobs need doing such as the water in the footwell. I also noticed last night I've got a dash light or two out. Between the two dials, it's dark. Ditto for the climate controls, they've got no illumination at all.
I've ordered a new ECT sensor as that's sending the timing gaga and that can't be good for various reasons.

A while back, I discovered a faulty ECT sensor when using the Lexia so today replaced it and all's back to normal on that score.
It was interesting to see it holding 81degrees under most conditions, from which I feel confident to infer the whole cooling system is now in good shape.
Oddly, the old sensor tests out ok on the bench. Perhaps I wasn't using enough heat long enough but from cold to boiling water, it reacted perfectly.

Nothing special to report - gave the old girl a short service as I'd covered over 1000 miles since the head gasket repair. My nephew found he could easily unscrew the oil filter by hand - thanks to me fitting it only as tight as is needed.
He still managed to round off the sump plug though after I stopped him trying to remove the gearbox drain plug Bless. In order to look after the turbo, I've changed the oil from mineral 15w/40 to semi-synth 5w/30 and next change will be to fully-synth. She seems to like the new oil as I was expecting more noise but if anything, it's quieter.
I've also been logging my fuel usage, hence the sig icon and was rather pleased to see over 44mpg average from the first tank because it was thrashed everywhere I drove it and fuelled by SVO. The second tank was a little disappointing though it might have been my miscalculation of how many litres a brimmed tank holds as well as the fact I've tweaked the fuel pump.
Apart from a slight huff or haze of smoke on startup I'm pleased to note she runs a very clean exhaust yet pulls nicely through the short rev range that diesels have. As I've fitted a boost gauge, I am surprised to see peak boost is in excess of the stock specification without me having adjusted it. In fact, the reason I'm surprised is because an earlier bench test showed the wastegate opens at 12-14psi (according to my footpump.) Yet I get 18/19psi on the gauge.
I had also begun trying to remove the many scratches and key marks with a view to a good thorough wash n polish but following Saturday mornings event (see my other thread) I lack motivation to even think about it now.
Aside from car news, I've bought a little toy - a miniDV cam from China. It was cheap, just under a tenner, is very, very basic and not exactly easy to get on with due to the tiny buttons and weak led indicators etc, etc but the quality is superior to what you might have thought when you first see it.

I've covered a few thousand miles and my head gasket repair is still holding, much to my surprise. I'm also paranoid about the crank pulley but regular inspections show it's unwarranted. Having said, I now feel I've tempted fate - pride before a fall and all that - it is the Tao.
First oil change at about 1000 miles was obviously left far too long and should have been changed sooner in retrospect. Less than 500 miles into the new oil and it's already black but, fortunately, not contaminated with large particles or other fluids as the previous oil was. There's obviously residual internal muck that needs more cleaning, perhaps an engine flush should be carried out next oil change. Anyone recommend a good flushing agent? One's I've tried before didn't appear to work at all.
Unable to resist, I've also tuned the fuel pump and turbo as best I can though the max fuel remains untouched due to the armour. I hope to replace the pump soon with a freshly sealed and modded pump, then the tuning can commence.
I'm also suprised my turbo has lasted this long as I'd inadvertantly pushed the peak boost up to 30psi for a few days in which I covered 200 miles of very hard driving. After studying the efficiency map of the GT15, I think 20psi is a reliable maximum, which it is now set to. Beyond that, there's a risk of overspeed and consequential failure.
Without the benefit of a dyno, I've tried to judge my tuning efforts by "following" quicker cars and judging how well I can keep up with them - usually over a 40-70mph dash. First test saw me blown away by a 3.0L V6. Second test showed greater improvement against the same car though I was carrying much less weight (appx the equivalent of three tanks full of fuel difference). Third test was with a Toyota Starlet (1300 go-cart with turbo) and the owner told me I managed to keep up better than the 150hp Golf TD's but I'm very skeptical about that judgement to be honest. Not least because of the mild state of tune and the fact I'm running on 99% veg oil!
Aside from the power boost, I'm also pleased to see the mpg average is just short of 40mpg because that is from very hard driving most of the time. Compared to my 2.0L petrol which would have plummeted to about 27mpg or less under similar use.
With the added torque, I've been caught out a few times sub-consciously trying to change up from fifth gear at ~70mph. I also experimented with starting from 2nd gear but it either bogs down due to lack of revs or the clutch slips with more power added. This is a with a relatively new (3Kmile) clutch according to the service history.
All in all, I'm inspired to try and get the cosmetics sorted (myriad of scratches and other blemishes) but the recent bumper assault and general lack of care of other public car park users, I'm reluctant to even begin.
Otherwise, I'm slowly tackling the mechanical jobs that need doing. One was to bleed the front brakes again and while there, inspected the MOT advisory of flexi pipe degradation. To my amazement, I couldn't see anything wrong with them, they appeared to be in very good condition!
Hopefully, this saturday, I'll get the use of a ramp lift and can get the height lowered to the correct setting. I think the steering is also getting a bit loose though nothing dangerous as it'll corner well at high speed and tracks straight and true generally - unless I hit a bump then there's a minor deviation to steer slightly left if not corrected.
The airbag light hasn't been addressed either and I'm slightly amused how low fuel, overheating coolant etc are indicated by an iddy-biddy liddle red dot light while the air bag in comparison is huge, flashes for several minutes then goes solid amber thereafter - which is pretty distracting at nightime. Oh, those French have such a sense of humour!
