Hi
My son who now has my ZX TD, has developed a fuel leak from the white plastic X shaped bung at the base of the Fuel filter alongside the fuel inlet from the primer.
What is this and how can it be cured, renew 'O' ring or screw-in to tighten. ??
Thanks

Hi Sooty,
This is the fuel heater thermostat and it often leaks.
I'm afraid replacement of the complete filter housing is the only sure cure as it is held together with a clip that will not allow it to be dismantled without damage. I once tried repairing one with Chemical Metal but it did not bond well to the plastic of the filter housing.
One cause of a leak here can be excessive pressure in the fuel system due to a blocked return line back to the tank. Pop it off and blow down it to ensure it is clear. You should be able to make the fuel bubble in the tank.
If it's blocked, take the tank pickup unit out of the tank and give the fuel strainer a good clean. It may be covered in a slimy mess. Again, this sometimes occurs if you have been running on vegetable oil as it tends scour the tank of deposits which then get caught up in the strainer.

It's one of those "star" type clips Sooty, I can't think of their proper name, they have angled teeth that allow easy installation and the angle of the teeth then "bite" into the plastic.
They're nearly impossible to get off without inflicting a bit of damage.
If you can though, you'll find normal O rings doing the sealing.
