Hi Jim.

That guide is realy good, much better to explain with pictures rather than words, well for simple folk like me it is.

This job can all be done without the gearbox being removed from the car, I have done this several times on the BX and Xantia models, a little more fiddly but none the less possible.

Cheers.
Martin.

That'll be a BE3.

Generally all Xantias have the BE3 except the Activa, 2.1TD and 110 HDi which have the ML5.

Thanks for that info'. The gearbox is one of the few things on my car that is spot on.

Pleiades & Citrojim,

Thanks for your replies. The fact that this problem can be sorted with the gearbox in the vehicle was a great piece of news. Apparently the standard garage time assigned to removal & refitting is 7.4hrs.

I had previously spotted the link that Jim posted but had not read it in any great detail. Does seem to be DIYable with the purchase of some tools that I don't already have.

I have also been scouting round for other gearbox specialists that fit recon boxes and have found one called The Gearbox Shop in Thornton Heath who have quoted £495 + vat for removal and replacement with recon box c/w 12month / 12000mile warranty. For this kind of money I must say i'm tempted. Does anyone have any experience of these people?

Thanks

Gammy

Well, over 2 years and 25000 miles later the box has finally been reconditioned. Cost of £645 incl parts & labour but not including extraction and refitting into vehicle. Total bill will be over £1k when new clutch is also factored in. OUCH!
1st & 2nd gear syncro's were shot which required purchase of new hub ( AKA??? ) from Citroen which was £350 by itself!!
I could have lived with the dodgy 2nd gear, but recently 1st gear was becoming difficult to select so the bullet had to be bitten.
I have spent little or nothing on the old bus over the last 5 years apart from service items and usual consumables ( exhaust, tyres, brakes etc ) so I can't really complain.

I've never trashed a box before and put the blame solely on the the shoulders of 'er indoors who has always had an 'agricultural' approach to gear changing at the best of times  . The good news is that the bus is now in my sole posession so will be treated with a little more respect from now on. :D
