Xantia Front Wing

Post by rory_perrett »

Hi

Couple of questions on Xantia Series 2 (98 onwards) front wings.

Are the front wings the same for all models and years?

Are the wings just bolted on and how easy are they to change?

Thanks in advance, please don't ask why I'm having to change my drivers side front wing (and door mirror)

not to sure from 98> but on the 96 one i took off they are bolted top and bottom with 2 bolts on inside of door
this edge is also stuck with some kind of adhesive and can take a bit of careful prising off

There's a tab/tongue on the front leading edge of the wing that
slots through the headlight panel on the earlier s1 wing that's
been done away with on the s2. Least that's what I recall anyhow;
it may be the other way around!! :)

Everything else WILL be straightforward with the possible
EXCEPTION of the captive nut in the bumper which can prevent
the wing coming off if it decides not to unthread...

Actually I do remember now. I had a front wing off a S2 that was fitted
on a late s1. I had to remove the tongue off the s2 wing to fit it on the
older car. Guess a s1 wing will fit a s2 without any trouble though...

Dont forget the small torx bolts that hold the headlight surround grille
to the front edge of the wing and the other hidden at the back corner
of the front bumper where it meets the start of the wing's arch!!

Thanks (again) I've sorted my ABS now with your help.

I never thought Series 1 and Series 2 wings would be interchangeable, I know they are not the same, I think the Series 2 are wider. Anyway I’ve got a used 1 on the way along with the other bits I need. Just hope it’s the right one, chap had several Xantias just hope he knows the difference between an S1 and an S2.

Hi Rory,

pleased the ABS is sorted - if you've got it fitted it's nice to know it works! :)

I wouldn't worry so much about the wing shape being wrong as there
ISN'T any difference (HONEST!! You can trust me - I work in advertising...)
BUT more the colour match being right between s1 and s2. Have you
cross checked the paint codes off the bulkhead?

Now things are less hectic as I'm at home now rather than the busy
office I can clearly define the differences after a front nearside wing
swap I did a fortnight ago on my Activa. The new wing came of a t-boned
S2 X plated car and fitted onto my P plate S1 car once the aforementioned
tongue/tab was twisted off - yes, a bit brutal maybe but it's thin and
snapped after work hardening the tab off; it's out of view under an
overlap of the headlight panel anyway.

Of course this won't bother you as you have a S2 and a S1 wing
wont create this problem!!

All the bolt fastenings are identical although you'll need to transfer the
colour coded rubbing strip and the white finished indicator side lamp of
your original unwanted wing.

Everything undid easily APART from the 13mm bolt that runs through
a wheelarch mounting and the wing into a threaded captive (with no
flats to grip) on the bumper's reinforced corner mounting.

A merry dance ensued! I've still got the scratches though they're
fading now...

Matching the colour would be a luxury, I’ve sort of come to terms with the likelihood of having to do a bit of spraying. Going to have to do a fair bit on the bumper if I’m going to save it. The chap I’m buying off advertised parts for a red S2 but when I said mine was blue he said he had a blue one as well but it had black door mirrors not colour coded ones which sounded a bit S1 to me. At this stage I felt discussions about paint codes was a bit superfluous as at that time I thought S2 and S1 wings were different and I would rather have had a red wing off an S2 than a might match blue wing off what could be an S1. Anyway he seemed convinced they were the same so he’s sending the red mirror and the blue wing.

Slight smile about transferring the clear indicator, afraid its not there anymore, wiped out by the skip that remodelled the wing and removed the mirror. MOT due next Thurs hence the rush to get it sorted. Thinking about what you said it might be better just stick the wing on for now even if it isn’t a match which will give me time to see if I can track down one of the right colour. As I’ve paid less for this wing than the paint will cost to repaint it, getting another wing the right colour later could be cheaper than painting, certainly less hassle.

Cheers

Rory
