Mine has covered 161k (110bhp HDI Exclusive Estate).

I've done 26k in the last 9 months.

Faults during my time

-bottom pulley needed replacing (delveoped that horrible rattle soon after I bought the car

- core plug started leaking very badly on the block.

Both of the above jobs resulted in visits to Paris Autos in Stockport. Routine servicing has been done by myself. All the electronics work at the moment apart from one electric window and one electric mirror which i'm not too bothered about really.

I've covered over 75k between my three xantias, two of which have been HDI and all have been bought at over 100k. The only breakdowns I've had have been the core plug failing on my current xantia and the headgasket blowing on my 1.9TD xantia.

Some interesting points here - although I have heard about the problem with the pump in the tank, I have never heard of it in relation to a xantia - only HDi 406's.

A work colleague of mine has a 2.2 petrol Vauxhall Signum, 95 k on the clock, and was dismayed that it was on its third fuel pump in as many years at £300+ a time. I asked him did he run it low on fuel, he admitted that he did and that sometimes it stuttered on steep hills. I advised him NEVER to let it get less than a quarter full. Guess what? No more stuttering.

Some diesel experts will tell you never to run a HDi too low on fuel as the propensity for causing further damage to the rest of the system is greatly increased in comparison to its lower - tech bretheren.

A couple of years back I almost bought a Mk V cortina as our second car - yes its crude but it I was attracted by its lack of mechanical complexity -a carb, no electric windows etc, points ignition. Sometimes I wish I had taken the plunge when I look at the some of the invoices in my cars' service history.

Sometimes low tech is definately better - especially if you are like me and buy your cars from the bargain basement.

Both have mine have randomly cut out before. In both cases replacing the fuel filter cured this. They need to be done on the button at the service interval i think

You say you replaced the fuel filter - did you replace the element or the complete black bowl assembly as well?

A relative of mine has a 206 Hdi which has given him 160k trouble free miles, except once when the system crashed and it stopped! a reprogramme seems to have cured it , but the dealer said that there was no guarantee. That is something that cant happen on an XUD engine.

I have a friend with a 607 who has spent several thousands of pounds on his, mostly on fuel injection problems, injectors are indeed about £500 and have to be programmed.

I have another friend with a Mondeo, near enough the same engine, no trouble at all for 60k, then the clutch/DMF went.

Yes, HDIs can be reliable and give high mileages but if you do have trouble, not only can't you repair it yourself but it could cost you a fortune.

I couldn't live with a car which if it broke down I couldn't fix myself, thats why I continue to run XMs. The last one that I sold had covered 292,000 miles, on the original engine and gearbox but the clutch had started slipping, at 250k miles! Was still driving OK when I sold it. I don't think many HDIs are going to match that.
