Andy what did we stick in my car that day (I'm on about the fuel not the nozzle that went missing when filling up)
Also how DO they regulate the use of it of private use?
Would you like fries with that car?

It was soya oil from Costco (£10ish for 20L) mixed with a little diesel and redex.TehAgent wrote:Andy what did we stick in my car that day (I'm on about the fuel not the nozzle that went missing when filling up)

Just got off the phone with HMRC and confirm that as long as you use less than 2500l you don't have to pay duty.
If you get close to that limit, it's your responsibility to inform them.
How they'd know if you're using more than 2500L I have no idea, it's about 38 xantia tank fulls.

from the paperwork i have you need to keep simple records for six years to show you are under 2500 litres per year......Xac wrote:It was soya oil from Costco (£10ish for 20L) mixed with a little diesel and redex.TehAgent wrote:Andy what did we stick in my car that day (I'm on about the fuel not the nozzle that went missing when filling up)

Tricky one that! Keep all your receipts from Costco etc showing purchases of oil and maintain a record of how much is used for strictly domestic cooking purposesXac wrote: How can you prove you don't use more than 2500L though?
Ultimately, it works on good old fashioned trust. A positive proof of miles clocked up on the vehicle may help as well. Pictures of your odometer with datestamps on them perhaps.
Also maintain a record of diesel purchases.
2500L of cooking oil should easily cover all your summer mileage

Well i could get just over 600 miles per tank full (65litres) , and with the driving i do i can cover that in about 2 weeks unless something crops up where i need to driver further.
So i have 1.4 tank full's per 2 weeks for 52 weeks of the year. (figure based on using 100% Veggie oil for each fill up)
Though id put less oil in over winter for obvious reasons and it would be a mix through out the summer. that should effectively halve my diesel costs and i wouldn't even come close to reaching the 2500ltrs for the year.
2500 / 65 = 38
(that's 2500 divided by 65 for the size of my tank = 38 tanks)
52 / 2 = 26
(topping up every other week, so 52 weeks in a year divided by 2 = 26)
38 / 26 = 1.46
(38 top ups over 26 weeks = 1.4 top ups per two weeks)
Mix it with diesel and my veggie usage is even less. Unless my calculations are wrong.

there are quite a few taxes that operate a system of 'trust' if you submit that you are 'producing' less than 2500 litres but they suspect you are running a business selling tens of thousands of litres they would investigate youXac wrote:How can you prove you don't use more than 2500L though?weety wrote: from the paperwork i have you need to keep simple records for six years to show you are under 2500 litres per year......

ultimately you cant prove you set aside less than 2500 litres for usuage as fuel but that should be adequate for most people.... 45mpg = 10 miles per litre so 2500 litres = 25000 miles of motoring per year
